RHODES TRUST.

GERMAN SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE. ANNOUNCEMENT WELCOMED BY PRINCE. (TJXITM PRBSS ASSOCIATION—BV ELECTBIC TELSGBAPH —COPYRIGHT.) (Received July Bth, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 7. Over 400 former Rhodes Scholars assembled in the banqueting hall at Rhodes House, Oxford, to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the creation of the Rhodes Trust. Mr Stanley Baldwin presided, and the Prince of Wales was the chief guest. There were nineteen Australians and five New Zealanders amongst those present, headed by Mr K. Sisan. For the first time since the war Germany was represented.

Three of the toasts were: Tho King, thv, Pres.aent of the United States, and the President of the German Republic. Mr Baldwin, in toasting the memory of the founder, stated that he had received cable messages from Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of the world, where Rhodes Scholars were holding similar celebrations. He proceeded to announce, on behalf of the trustees, that it had been decided that the scholarships should again be available lor Germany. Mr Baldwin explained that the five scholarships which had been taken from Germany in 1916 would remain with the Dominions, but that those now given would be extra, thus enabling four German Rhodes Scholars to attend Oxford. The Prince welcomed the announcement. "We have with us to-night some old German Rhodes Scholars," he said, "and we welcome them back to Oxford most heartily. I myself have had the pleasure this evening of shaking hands with an old Magdalen man who was a German Rhodes Scholar, and whom I had not Bv-..i since 1914. In this building, and in tho Colreges, there will be found on the rolls of honour the names of German Rhodes Scholars who fell in the war, which shows that this Foundation is not based on any narrow racial feeling, and that its ideals are those which all may follow, forgetful of past enmities and reviving old friendships."—Australian Press Association, Official W : tfess.
