ALLEGED LOTTERY.

* TAKAPUNA BOATING CLUB CHARGED. £THE PBBSS Special SeiTtce.} AUCKLAND, July 8. "I strongly object to the Takapuna Boating Club running such a scheme as this. Why, no one else would even attempt to carry on such a thing,'' protested Chief-Detective Hammond at the Police Court this morning. The case was one in which three members of the Takapuna Boating Club were prosecuted. Roy Lidgard was charged with assisting in the management of a lottery at the shed at the Winter Show on July sth, receiving money for tickets by which permission or authority was gained by the purchaser to receive prizes Charles George Black well and James Johnson Mackay were charged with, on the same date, disposing of envelopes containing tickets by which authority or permission was given to compete or have an interest in a lottery whereby prizes were gained by mode of chance. Mr Vialoux, said Mr Northcroft, had been-instructed to appear for the three defendants. Mr Northcroft was engaged in a case at the Supreme Court and he requested a weeks adjournment. '"Unless an undertaking is given that the lottery- will not be continued at the Winter Show I will oppose an adjournment and ask that the case bo proceeded with this morning," said Mr Hammond. Mr Vialoux said lie was not in a position to give such an undertaking. Mr Hammond said there were at least ten salesmen Eelling envelopes at the Winter Show. Some envelopes contained cash prizes and others tickets in the lottery. Mr Vialous added that permission had been obtained from the Minister for Interna! Affairs. Mr Hammond: That's quite wrong; not for the scheme which is now running at the Show. It is a pure lottery and they will not stop it, your Worship. Thev want an adjournment now to carry them through the Winter Show this week. We have been very tolerant with them: last year we gave them an inch and now they have taken a mile. M r Hunt adjourned the hearing until to-morrow.
