CITY COUNCIL.

LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The City Council met last evening. -Those present were: Tho Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer), Crs. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., E. B. McCombs, F. B. Coolie, P. W. Bharpe, T. H. Betterfleld, A. E. Armstrong, H. T. JThacker, A. I. Fraer, A. W. Beaven, J. A. Flasher, M. E. Lyons, W. H. Williamson, J. Parlane', and E. H. Andrews. The financial statement gave the following particulars for the two weeks ended July 2nd 1929: —General rate levied. _l2s,4b£> 19s 9d, collected £122,644 15s 9d, outstanding £2821 4s. The Abattoir, Markets, and Reserves Committee reported:— . , Approximately 6000 cuttings of trees and shrubs have been inserted in the nursery. Ground is now being prepared for the lmmgout of young trees in the spring. The re-turfing of worn-out patches on the river banks between Cashel street and victoria street bridges is being attended to. Where the rhododendrons were not flourishing the bushes were lifted and transferred to the nursery and the beds turfed over. The report was adopted. By-Laws, Finance, and J>epartmeotal Committee. The By-laws, Finance, and Departmental Committee reported: — _ i . The question ©t appointing a cadet (ma»e; for clerical work in the Traffic Inspectors outside office, in order to save the time occupied by the traffic inspectors, has been considered by the committee. It has been ascertained that each inspector spends on an overage at least one hour a day writing up reports and entering up warning notices, and if a eadet were employed this time would be considerably decreased, tl.us enabling the inspectors to do more outside work. In addition, there are numerous enquiries to be made at the Post Office relating to owners of motor-cars which could be done by a cadet. The successful applicant will require to be a shorthand -writer and typist. , An application has been received from iir S. VT. Hk-iunott for permission to erect a petrol station at the corner of Langdown street and Waltham road. therefore granted permission for its «•©• tion, subject to the usual conditions, and to the land for rounding the corner being dedicated for street purposes. Mrs S E. Hole has offered to dedicate to the Council • strip of land for rounding the corner of Cadogan and Huxley »treets, Sydenham, providing the Council erects 70 feet of fencing on the proposed new boundary. It is estimated that the approximate cost of the fencing would be £2O. The committee recommends that Mrs Hole's offer be accepted. The Town Planning Committee has been in negotiation with Mr R. P. Hsrman for 16J feet of hie property on Hawford road for Btreet-vvidening purposes. Mr Harman has accepted the committee's offer of 10s per foot for the land, provided the Council pays the costs of survey and transfer. The amount involved is £SS 10s. An application has been received on beI half of Mr W. Ballantyne for permission to erect a cycle rest on the kerb outride I/antyne House in Lichfield street. The committee has granted permission, subject to the stand being placed at least 20 feet from the corner, and to the nsual conditions governing the erection of cycle rests. The report was adopted. Electricity CommftUe. The Electricity Committee reported: — Ten tenders were received for the supply and delivery of sir miles of V.1.8. cable. The lowest tender, that of Messrs A y Riley and Co.
