♦ f RANGIORA. ; Arrangements are being mack to hold | dog trial matches on the Shew Grounds I in aid of the Earthquake Relief Fund. , The lessee of the grounds, Mr A. Graham, has given permission for the use of the grounds free, and arrangements Ifor the trials are 'being carried oat by Mr T. Whit?, aDd will be held in kbout ten days' time. Arrangements »re also being made for a luncheon and tea tent on the grounds. Mr G. J. Smith, who has been in a Ohristehureh hospital for the past five creeks, has returned to his home in B&ngiora. He is thoroughly restored to h}s usually good health. 'Thanksgiving services on the recovery o| King George from his illness were in all the churches yesterday. The Kaiapoi Harrier Club held a 10 mil© teams' race on Saturday afternoon, twice over the local championship course! —teams of four, each man running two and a half miles. The winning team was <C. do L. Gordon (captain), I. Richardson, A. Gray, and A. Clarke. A. D. Kane's team was second, L. G. Harpers team third, and A. Tozer's team fourth. The time was 60 minutes over a very wet and heavy course. WAIAU. A social organised by the Sunday School teachers took place in the Coronation Hall on Friday evening, when the Presbyterian Sunday School children and their parents were present. With musical items, recitations, games, competitions, and community singing a pleasant time was spent. After supper Mr T. H. Belton, Superintendent, thanked the parents for their attendance, and the Rev. J. Newlands called on the children for three cheers for the teachers. The function terminated with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." The weekly shoot of the Miniature Rifle Club was held on Friday evening, when there was a good attendance. Tho shoot for the Higgins's trophy was completed, and this, after the fourth shoot-off, was won by Mrs W. D. Jelfs. The weekly handicap medal was won by Miss Janice McKie, as was also Mr J. R. Cameron's trophy. Next week tho shoot for Messrs Watson and Little's trophy, the best two shoots out of three, will commence. - The weather during the week has been fine, but several very hard frosts, the severest of the season, have been experienced.
OHOKA. The bachelors' ball, always one of the successful functions of Ohoka, was again a most pronounced success. Invitations had been broadcasted throughout the district, and drew a largs attendance from all around. The decorations of streamers in green and scarlet relieved with greenery on the Trails, had a most pleasing effect. Music was contributed by Knight's Jazz Band, with extras by several guests present. Messrs H. Power and C. Cooke acted as M.C.'s. A contribution from the profits of the ball was made to the Earthquake Belief Fund. Already a committee has been formed to work up the ladies' ball, always given in return, which it is proposed to hold towards the end of the month. SEDGEMERE. A successful concert, organised' by Mrs T. A. Edwards, was held in the Sedgemere Hall in aid of the funds of St. Mark's Chur-'. A large and appreciative audience practically filled the hall. The programme was given by district p rformers. The Kev. J. A. Shardlow expressed the thanks of the wardens and congregation to those who had given their services to provide entertainment. A dano- was held in the latter part of the evening. | WOODEND. j Friday was given up to games at the I Woodend school, when teams from Oxford engaged the local scholars in friendly rivalry, at Rugby and basketball. The games were keenly contested and resulted as follows:— Rugby: Woodend A 6, Oxford A 3. J<"»|* : Oxford B 27, Woodend B nil Ihe basketball scores were:—Oxford A », Woodend A 6; Oxford B 5, Woodend & A The Woodend Oddfellows held their annual ball in the Woodend Hall on Friday evening. A fairly representative number of young people assembled, including visitors from other lodges m the vicinity. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss S. Gibling and Mr »• Smith. Mrs Southen (piano), accompanied by Mr Hancocks (violin) and Mr Joblin (cornet), supplied the music, and the M.C.'s were Messrs R. Cutler and M. Griffin. . At a North Canterbury Sub-Union junior match in the Domain on Saturday, Oxford beat Woodend by 15 points to nil. A basketball jrame in the school grounds was decided between Woodend B and Kaiapoi B, the former winning by 10 points to 5. Thanksgiving services were held in the Anglican and Methodist Churches yesterday, in common with the rest of the Dominion, for the King's recovery. Retiring collections were taken for the Earthquake Relief Fund.
KOWAI BUSH. During the past week the old school, which for fifty-six years has been a landmark, was towed out of the playground by a traction engine. It now rests on a new site, recently acquired for the purpose, and is no longer a school, but a hall. Working bees, composed of the Hall Committee and other volunteers, were busy every day last week, and the hall is * now ready for the carpenters. The playground is very much improved by the removal of the building, and there is no doubt that when the hall has been renovated it will prove a great boon to the residents.
HALKETT. A meeting of the residents of Halkett was held in the Hall on Thursday night for the purpose of considering the proposed reticulation with electric current of the houses in the Paparua area of> the district. Prior to the meeting a discussion took place as to the best way *o put the hall in order prior to the installation of the light in that building. It waß decided to hold a working-bee at the Hall on July loth, and paint the building inside and out. The chairman of the House-wiring Committee, Mr R. S. Roper, reported having received six tenders in response to an advertisement for wiring the houses of the district. It was decided to make further enquiries with reference to the two lowest tenders, the committee to make the final decision. After making further enquiries the committee decided to accept the tender
