County Council. At the monthly meeting of the County j Council, held yesterday, Mr J. Cifr presided. , ... A resolution of sympathy was passed witn the relatives of the bereaved and to those who suffered by the earthquake. The sum of £250 was voted to the relief fond. It was agreed to send a letter of sympathy to the Murchison County Council. The financial statement showed a debit of £lsod 5* 4d. . . •The chairman reported that the minister for Lands would not raise any objections to the Council's proposal to lease plantation rwerres for agricultural purposes. The Forestry Department offered its services in assisting the Council in its forestry operations, but declined to assume any control or oversight. The amount of £376 had been received in rates to date. Good results had been reported from the distribution of 20301b of pliOKphorised oats in an effort to poison birds. The Borough and County Councils considered that they should purchase an area of land for an Ashburton aerodrome by way of assisting tbe Mid-Canterbury Aero Club, but the Minister for Defence had stated that local bodies had no power to do this. They had referred the matter to the county solicitor, who previously advised that they had power. If this was correct, they would negotiate In conjunction with the Borough Council for a suitable area, and obtain an option of a greater area, then report to the ConncU. _ . . . j The engineer (Mr A. A. Fooks) reported that the scheme for lighting the new Ashburton traffic bridge had been approved, and tenders would be called for the erection of '• the bridge within the next fortnight. The ' relief gangs had nearly completed improving the grades and bends on the road through the Rakaia Gorge, and would be removed to the road in the Selwyn County. Members commented adversely upon the action of the Main Highways Board and Public Works Department in drawing all the money for upkeep on certain West Coast roads from the highways fund. In reply to Mr Houston, who said he considered that too good • iob had been made in the improvement of the bend of the Alford Forest road above the waollen mills, the engineer said the work was carried out according to the specifications of the Highways Board. _ „ The sum of £2 3s was voted to the seafleld and Hinds Rifle Clubs, and £23 10s each to the Highbank, MethTen, and Hinds Domain Boards and the Methven Cemetery Dissatisfaction was expressed by councillors at the output of the Council's crushing plant, and it was decided that returns be furnished of the operation of the plant for the next month. . , , . 1 Mr H. C. B. Withell was appointed chairman of tho Finance Committee, and it was decided to place on record appreciation of the services of the retiring chairman, Mr >v. T. till. . » w Mr J. R. Simpson, of Lismore, wrote mating that the Council was in too much of a hurry to construct bitumen roads. At present Ashburton had the best roads in Canterbury. The ratepayers had no use for (bitumen roads, and they would blame the Council fer extravagance. Bitumen or any other similar preparation would be doomed to failure owing to the soft foundation of the roads. The letter was received. In reply to the Council which requested that the rate of interest on the proposed advance from the Main Highways Board for the construction of the permanent highway from Rakaia to Hinds should not exceed 5 per cent., the Minister for Finance wrote stating that it did not appear that the rate of 5J per cent, required was excessive. District Highways Council No. 15 that the Main Highways Board could ■make an allowance which would make up tne difference between 5 per cent, ttnd 03 P er cent, interest. » It was decided to accept tho «-i the Main Highways Board to pay i f>«r cent, on (he money advanced to tne «. «-i<for tho paving scheme, v.-d recommended .ha. tenders be called for the work to fre done in two blocks for immedmte construction. Morgan) reported that the grain merchants had formed themselves into a s,ub-comiEitlee, and the Glassworks Company had offered to make the seed bottles free. The Christchureh executive had fixed the Ratals river as Ashburton's northern boundary, but no mention had been made of the gouthern boundary. It vag decided to suggest August 17th as th« date for the excursion to Christchurch. Mr Morgan made an appeal for sheaves of grain suitable for decorative purposes, and stated there appeared likely to be a difficulty concernias eggs, especially turkey and geese eggs. roinfc-to-Point Steeplechase. The first point-to-point meeting in Asbbnrton, after a period of 33 years, vill be held at Tinwald this afternoon, by the Ashburton branch of the Chi-istchurch Iluut. The newly revived branch has met -with enthusiastic support, and the majority of the trophies have been given by individuals. For the two steeplechase evants the course is in full vie-w of the pviblie. Providing fine rreather is experienced, a successful meeting is assured. STAVELEY. The B«v. J. McKenaie, a, Canton village missionary at present on furlough, gate a lantern lecture to an attendance of about fifty in tlie Presbyterian Church on Monday evening. The cold winds of last week mitigated their keenness on Tuesday, and since there has been a return to typical winter weather, bright, warm days following hard frosts. The frost on Thursday morning was one of the hardest this season. For June rain was recorded at Stavfeley on 14 days and totalled for the month 532 points, which brought 'the total for the' first six montn* of this year to 1833 points, compared to 2188 points for the first six months of last year. In June, 1928, 252 point 3 were recorded locally. One of the early settlers in the district, Mr Thomas Bright, passed away at tho County Hospital on Monday afternoon. The late Mr Bright, who was 77 yeara of age, ■was born in Scotland and gpent his youth in Glasgow. In 1873 he came to New Zealand, lanaing in Port Chalmers. Later he spent some years contracting in the North Island, but finally set'ed in Springburn. At the time of his death he was a member of the Mount Somers Road Board. Th? funeral was conducted by the Itev. G. Wood on Wednesday, members of the Kond Board acting as pali-Kearers. For a number of years now the girls and the boys of the two upper classes at the local school have attended cooking and manual training classes at the Ashlmrtori Technical School, bat it is likely that they attended these classes in Ashburton for the last time on Thursday. On a recent visit to the .school an inspector investigated the matter and found that the children had to leave home very early in the morninjr and arrived back late at night, so that he advised the classes to be discontinued at A?h burton. Arrangements have now been made for instruction to be received locf.Hy. and : tools for the woodwork c!a«ses * have i already been received. !
