With regard to the Pro>s i.,'. 1011 message from Auckland :!:u a meeting at Auckland i on\ < ib> Mr E. Langzuth, formerly Austrian Consul, bad carried a resolution that the German Consul for New Zealand should be asked to withdraw !:i> request that no civic reception be given in Auckland to the otikvrs of the Carman cruiser Emden, the German Consul (Mr VV. Pen&eler) states; "Possibly Mr Langguth> action is based on a misconception, txcause my action was not a request to cancel an existing arrangement, but a tion to abandon, if deemed advisable, a reported proposal for an arrangement." Hie German Consul to-day revived the following telegram from Auckland : •'At a very representative general public meeting held last night the opinion was strongly voiced, and a resolution was passed unanimously, th.ii a civic reception in Auckland should be insisted upon. I have been instructed to ask you to rescind your previous decision in this connexion and to ask you to wire me whether you will officially support our deputation asking the Mayor of Auckland for a civic reception." To this Mr Penseler replied a» follows :
"I received your telegram this even ing. Please understand that my action was not a request to the Mayor of Auckland to cancel an existing arrangement for a civic reception, but a suggestion, if deemed advisable, to abandon a reported • proposal for such an arrangement. Existing conditions fully justified my action. You have no right in insisting officially upon the Mayor granting a civic- reception, which function exceeds the usual courtesies. To beg for favours would be undignified. My attitude is approved. Please desist in your agitation and do r.or sroil <nr good cause. The just sense of .Vew Zealand will assert itself agninpt unfriendly or vacillating attitudes."'
