rangiora. 2s.G. Bro. G. Ridout presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., on Monday. Bro. D. T. Patterson, P.D.G.M. of the Asliburton District, was cordially -welcomed. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Bros. W. Cattermoor and T. J. Thompson and with P.D.G.M. Bro. Johnson in his illness. Two candidates were initiated. The District Secretary advised that the Ashley District Officers would officially visit the Lodge on June 24th. A challenge from the Loyal Ohoka Lodge to a cards match was accepted, and July £2nd was fixed a3 a suitable date. The Y.G.-eleet, Bro. H. A. Johnstone, was installed, and appointed Bros. E. J. Miles and G. D. Blake as his supporters. With the object of stimulating interest in the meetings it was decided that a committee be appointed to work up an old initiation ceremony to be presented to the members at a later meeting. Si''k pay amounting to £2O ss, funeral allowances ioO, and a maternity allowance £6 were passed for payment. in the Orange Hall on Monday evening Miss P. Hollow delivered to over forty members ot" the W.E.A. the first of a series of lectures upon Shakespeare. The screening of a number of views illustrating important points in literature and art leading up to the age of Shakespeare was much appreciated. At the close the Rev. W. R. Hutchison warmly expressed the appreciation of the class. Miss Hollow announced that next Monday she would deal with Shakespeare's play, "The Merchant of Venice." KAIAPOI. Hie second round of the Kaiapoi Friendly Societies' card tournament was commenced on Monday, when Lodge Trafalgar, U.A.0.D., defeated Court Woodford, A.0.F., by 4.5 games to 40. Considerable interest is being taken in the torunament. The next match takes place on June 2oth between Loyal Kaiapoi Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., and Court Woodford, A.O.F. WAIKARI. At the quarterly meeting of the Loyal Oddfellows' Lodge, N.G. Bro. R. Trounce presided. Officers were installed as follows: —N.G., Bro. O. James; V.G., Bro. H. Main; E.S., Bro. J. Mowatt; warden, Sister E. Brien; guardian, Bro. J. Hisoocks. Two maternity bonuses and. sick pay "were passed for payment. OXFORD. On Saturday Mrs D. Hawk©, sen., met with a painful accident. She was coming out of her coal house when, tripping on the doorstep, she fell on to tne concrete path and broke her left arm close to the wrist. She was_ taken to the local hospital, where she is now progressing satisfactorily. BELFAST. As the members of the W.C.T.U. r&si'ling in the Ouruhia district hawo decided to sever from the Belfast branch and elect their own officers, a meeting was held in the drawingroom at Mrs Dawber's residenoe. Miss McLay, organiser, gave some of her experiences of modes of transport in almost inaccessible spots and or W.C.T.U. work in general, The million shillings fund, the first appeal made to the public by the W.C.T.U., has been launched, and it is hoped this will be successful by next March. _ It is intended to hold another meeting later in the month and it is hoped Miss Mci Lay will again be present. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Dawber for the use of her room and for providing afternoon tea. SOUTHBRIDGE. Yesterday morning, members of the Southbridge Burgesses' Association conferred with representatives of the Post and Telegraph Dej>artment in reference to a desire for improved telephone facilities. A Post Office apart from the railway station is a need that has been felt for. a considerable time, and hopes are entertained that the Department, &s a result of enquiries made by its officers, will see its way to build one. The monthly meeting of the Southbridge Town Board was held on Monday, Mr J. Griffin presiding. The Town Clerk of Christchureh gave particulars of a meeting held to discuss the institution of a free ambulance service. The chairman reported having attended the meeting and stated that it rested with the local bodies to say •whether a service covering the North Canterbury district should be inaugurated. Members favoured the scheme, but agreed that the Board could not afford to make a large annual contribution. A resolution was passed resolving that the Board should not commit itself to a contribution until it knew what the amount would be. Mr Hill reported upon the works done during the month, and stated that fine shingle from the Ridge road at Lakeside could be used with advantage on some of the footpaths. Mr Harrison said that he was willing that pipes should be laid to lead flood water to his back section, and the chairman of the Works Committee said that this would be done. In regard to a request made at the previous meeting for an additional street light, Messrs Bennett and Maw reported having inspected and found the light was needed, but it was a question whether the Board could find a larger sum for street lights than it was paying at present. It was agreed that the chairman should interview the Power Board engineer to ascertain whether, by having a larger number of lights, a reduced rate could be given. After discussing matters relating to the proposed new Town Hall, it was agreed that the architect should be asked to meet the Board to discuss details concerning the plans and arrange for the calling of tenders. It was decided to hand to the solicitor a list of overdue rates for immediate collection.

LITTLE RIVER. Mr and Mrs W. Mould have returned from a holiday spent in Timaru. Mrs H. French is spending a holiday with friends in Christchurch. A very successful dance organised by the residents of Puaha in aid of the sohool funds, was largely attended. Toe music waa supplied by Miss Doreen Giddens and Mr Geo. Fairweather acted as M.C. The chairman of the Wairewa County Council (Mr W. P. Parkinson) and Cr. D. P. Foley are to report on the question of providing an asphalt footpath in the township.
