ashburton. unemployment. A number of enquiries for employment have been received by the Ashburton. Countv Council during the v^ee.^. The"County Clerk (Mr G. Keliy) mentioned to a representative of The Press on Saturday that the Council had absorbed so many men in other years and had laid open such a quantity of relief work that it was now a problem to find suitable work for the men. Motor Licenses. Although there lia3 been a steady demand for renewals of motor vehicle licenses at the Ashburton County Council's offices, between four and five hundred have yet to come in. To date, 2166 licenses have been i=sued since the new licensing year. Girl Guides. An inspection of the Ashburtori, Methveii, and Hokeby Girl Guides was made by the Ashburton District Commissioner, Mr G. Ij. Harold, on Friday evening, when over 100 Guides, including those of the ranger companies, were present. At the conclusion of the inspection the Commissioner expressed herself as being very pleased with the turn-out and efficiency of the girls. Musical Club. A lecture on Schubert and his songs was given to members of the Ashburton Musical Club on Saturday evening by Mr W. H. Dixon, of Christchureh. He illustrated his address with a number of songs, in which he was assisted by Mrs H. Naylor. In Bankruptcy. A petition in bankruptcy has been filed by John McLauchlan, farmer of Eiffelton, and a meeting of creditors will be held in the office of the Official Assignee on June 19th. Cricket Club's Dance. The St. Stephen's Cricket Club held a dance in the Orange Hall on Saturday night. Music was supplied bv Mrs A. Mitchell's band. Heavy Bain. Heavy rain commenced to fall about 4.30 p,m. on Saturday, and continued until the early hours. Up to 9 a.m. 41 points of rain were recorded for the previous twenty-four hours.
