PUPILS IN FLYING.

PRACTICE IN LANDING. Yesterday was a good day for flying, and Captain J, C. Mercer took advantage of it to instruct the pupils of the Canterbury Aero Club in landing. There are nine who bar* turned op in the first bat<;h, and they are each receiving up to an hour's instruction a day. Naturally they will not be competent to fly solo until they have spent six or seven hours in the air. It will be some months before their training is finished, and there is a second hatch of pupils waiting to follow on, besides the nucleus of a third. The total membership of the club is about 230 at present. It has not yet been decided what form of certificate pupils who have been pronounced "air-worthy" by the various aero clubs will receive st the end of their course. There will no doubt be one form of certificate for the whole of New Zealand, and it will probably be issued by the Government in conjunction with the various aero clubs. One of the exhibits in the procession this week in connexion with Empire Shopping Week will be a Moth aeroplane, with wings folded and mounted on a lorry. This will be one of the 'planes allotted to the Canterbury Aero Club, special permission having been granted by the Defence authorities for this to be done.
