WOMEN'S OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. MISS WETHERED BEATS MISS COLLETT. (.CXrrXD PF.ESS ASSOCIATIOS—BT ELBCVBIC •XTSLEG3APE —COPYBIGHT.) LONDOK, May 17The final of the women's open go'J championship resulted as follows: Miss Joyce Wcthered (Britain) beat Miss Gienna, Collett (U.S.A.), 3 and 1. Wethered was making her first appearance in the championship after an absence of four years. She won the title in 1922, 1924, and 19&5. Miss Collett is American national champion. Ten thousand watched the thrilling AngloAmerican golf final at St. Andrews between Mise Glenna Collett, the first American to rea<ch the final, and Miss Joyce WetheredMiss Wethered retired from competitive golf three years ago because she hated crowds, but her play was impressive throughout tne championship. MUs Collett, anticipating defeat, went cut care-free and almost with indifference, but produced a sensational display ,and ehe was surprised to find herself 5 up •at the turn. She had a birdie at the -fifth, and holed 18, 20, and even GO-foot putts. Misß Wethered was unusually nervous, and failed with four-foot and eight-foot putts. Miss Collett went out in 34, two under the men's par, but Miss Wethered took 39. ifiss Collett failed with three-foot putts at the twelfth and fourteenth holes, after which she became unnerved. Miss Wethered, regaining confidence, reduced her lead to two, and 6quared the ecoro after lunch at the 21st hole. Miss Collett, recovering, repeated her morning's performance, and had a birdie at the 23rd, squaring the score. Miss Wethered played on doggedly, and out-putted Miss Collett, being 4 up at the 27th. Miss Collett, at the Slst, reduced the lead by one, but Miss Wethered, playing grimly and silently, became dormy two. Mibs Collett, failing to hole at the 17th, did not wait for Miss Wethered to put down a two-footer, but ran across the green and shook hands with the conqueror.-—United Service.
