NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The anniversary services of the Bangiora Methodist Chureh were held yesterday, and were attended by large congregations. The Rev. S. Henderson conducted both the morning and evening services and preaebed appropriate sermons. Special hymns were sung by the choir, under Mr A. Lane. At the moraine service the choir sang the anthem, "The Lord is My Light," Miss Ayers singing the connecting solo. Miss Ayers also sang a further solo after the offertory. At the evening service the anthem, "I am Alpha and Omega" (Maunder),' was also sung by the choir. A special musical service was held in the afternoon when a programme of anthems and solos was given by the Papanui Methodist Choir, under Mr W. J. Salkeld. There was again a large attendance. The offertory for the day was in aid of the Trust funds, and was exceptionally good. The anniversary will be continued to-morrow evening with a social, when the annual report will be read. . . Yesterday morning the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade were called out to a small outbreak of Ere at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church. The fire was caused through the stove pipe of one of the church heaters setting aught to a bird's nest in the roof. The outbreak was quickly suppressed with slight damage to "the roof. Mr G A Broadley, who is retiring from the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills after being employed by the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company on and off tor about 40 vears, was the recipieitVor a Kaiapoi rug and a pair of blankets as a mark of the respect and esteem in which he was held by his fellow-workers in the carding room and by the toremen of the mill. The. presentation was made bv the mill manager, Mr 1. H. who made appreciative reference to Mr Broadley's long and faithful service to the Company. CHEVIOT. The president (Mr F. D. Childs) presided over a well-attended meeting of the committee of the Cheviot Collie Club It *-as decided that the trials be held on June 24th, 25th and 26th. The secretary reported that a large number .of special donations ana trophies had been received for tne special prize list. Mr J. Fitzsimmons was added to the General Committee.. Macdonald presided over the last meeting of the Cheviot branch of the Plunket Society, when there was a crood attendance. The chief business of the meeting was to consider the question of the erection of the proposed rest room on the section that has been secured by the Society. After considerable discussion it was decided that a room be erected at an approximate cost of £3OO. Messrs J. T. Read and G. Struthcrs were appointed trustees ot the building fund, tfhieh now standß at about £IOO. and Messrs G, R. Macdonald. J. T. Read. J. Paton mid G Struthers were appointed an Advisory Committee. Tt was decided that the next meeting take the form of a bnng-and-buy afternoon in aid of the building fund.

WAIKARI. Prior to his departure from the district, Dr. G. I. Miller was entertained at a social evening by a large number of Presbytcriar friends. The evening •was happily spent in musical items, games, and competitions, the winners being Mrs Jones and Miss M. Arres. The musical items were: Pianoforte solos, Miss K. Hall and Miss J. Sheridan; pianoforte duet Misses J. and M Arres; quartets, Bible Class girls and Bible Class boys. Miss F. Anderson acted as accompanist. On behalf cf the church, the chairman the Rev. J. Anderson, presented Dr. Miller with a handsome oak smoker's companion and expresed regret at the-district's loss. A dainty supper was served by the ladies. DARFIELD. The first of the weekly card-socials and dances in aid of the Domain Pavilion Fund Was held in the Memorial Hall last week. In spite of the rough weather there was a good attendance. Messrs S. Higgins and J. Millard and Mrs L. Register and Mrs H. Otten won the largest number of games. The music for the dance was supplied by Mr A. Hart, and Mr M. Anderson was M.C. In the second match of the billiard tournament DarfieJd (Messrs R. G. Forrester, A. Black, R. G. Robinson, M. L. Page) 757 defeated Kirwee (Messrs G. Begg, G. Caldwell, A. Stewart, R. Roger) 570, and Waddington (Messrs W. J. Jenkins, F. Jenkins, L. Jenkins, and T. S. Innes) 390 "defeated Sheffield (Messrs Q. A. Wright, L. T. Wright, G. F. Wright, and Miss R. Wright) 343. Mr W. J. Glanville, of Whangarei is at present paying a visit to his parents, Mr and Mrs W. J. Glanville. BROOMFIELD. On Friday evening a large crowd of residents of Broomfield and surrounding districts met to bid farewell to Mr E. F. Davison, who has been schoolmaster at Broomfield for the past five rears, and who has now been transferred to Sedgemere. On behalf of the residents, Mr S. Wornall called on the Eev. H. J. W. Knights, to make the presentation of a travelling -ug to Mr Davison. Master Alec. Phillips made a brief speeeh on behalf of the. pupils, and then called on Miss Elsie Edwards to present Mr Davison with an inscribed oak clock. Mr Davison - briefly replied.. During, the evening, a musical programme was contributed, the children also taking part. A hare drive will be held at Broomfield Station: en June 3rd.

FERNSIDE. On Friday a "kitchen evening" was held in the school in honour of Miss K. Milne and Mr H. I. Sutherland, who are to be married this week. Mr S. C. Hewitt, on behalf of those present, mado a short speech prior to the opening of the parcels by the guests or the evening. A large and varied collection of useful kitchen utensils was received. On his own and Miss Milne s behalf, Mr Sutherland suitably responded. During the evening a lucky spot waltz was won by Miss E. Mcintosh and Mr T. Smith. Prizes were also awarded to Mrs M. C. Hyde and Mr J. H. Doak. Mr C. W. Court was M.C Music was eupolied by Misses M. M. Sutherland, D. Hyde, M. Evans, and Mr F. W. Evans. The Fernside Tennis Club also held an evening recently in honour of Miss Milne and Mr Sutherland. This took place at the residence of Mr Bowman. Games, dnncing. and competitions were greatly enjoyed by all present. Competitions were won by Misses M. Milne and D. Smith, Messrs C. Bowman, and D. Milne. In rraking the presentation, of a silver teapot nnd coffee-pot, Mr \V. V. Guv referred to the fact that Miss Milne had been honorary secretarv to the club since its inception. Mr H. I. Sutherland suitably responded on Miss Milne's behalf.

WOODEND. Allan, the nine-year-old son of Mr and Mrs F. S. Chhmcry, met with a painful accident on Friday afternoon. He fell from the front of a loaded dray upon which he had been riding, and a wheel passed over his left arm above the elbow, badly fracturing the limb. He was taken to Brocklehurst Hospital, Bangiora, where he is progressing as well as can be expected. Frost laid its chilly hand on the district on Friday night, and many residents were surprised on Saturday morning to find their taps frozen. A large number of ad ilts and scholars, past and presentj assembled in the school on Friday evening, for a social tendered to Mr and Mrs J. Forbes, in recognition of the valuable services Mr Forbes has rendered durfhg the past ten years as a member of the School Committee, of which, for the last two years he had been chairman. Complimentary speeches were made by Mr B. Robertshaw. (the present chairman), Mr 11. Gillmaii (schoolmaster), and Mr W. Percy (representing the householders). A canteen of stainless cutlery was presented to the guests. Mr Forbes said that Mrs Forbes and himself had found pleasure in their work for the community. The following contributed musical and elocutionary items: Misses Williams, Borland, B. and K. Chinnery, Mrs Eobertshaw, and Messrs W. Nelson, L. Sheppard, and H. Eobertshaw. Mrs D. Shea played the accompaniments. and Mrs Southen supplied the dance music. Supper, and the singing ot "Auld Lang Syne," concluded the evening. The Woodend Junior football team played a team from Glenmark in the North Canterbury Sub-Union division, m the Domain, Woodend, Glenmark winning by 17 points to 3. A benefit match was played later between Old Boys and Woodend seniors, the superior weight and tactics of Old Boys gained them an easy victory. The Old Boys played against the sun in the first half, and compiled 11 points, m the second spell, though the seniors played a good game, they could not prevail. The final scores were, uia Boys 24, Woodend nil. During the game a collection taken up amongst the spectators realised £8 ss. This is being added to other efforts to erect a memorial to a late member, H. Dynes, who died a short while ago. The Woodend B basketball team sutured defeat at the hands 4i Sefton visitors, the game taking place in the School grounds. Scores;, Se.fton la.;Woodend B 7.
