Price, "Morven," Waddington, the occasion being the twenty-first birthday of their only daughter, Rona. The evening passed pleasantly with musical items, games, competitions, and dancing, the music for which was supplied by the Misses 1. and R. Gilmour Kpiano), and Mr M McLennan (violin), ihe competitions were won by Misses Linda Tarling and Rita Gilmour, Mrs P. Frandsen. and Mr F. Teale. The usual toasts were honoured, and Mr P. Franrlsen. in proposing the voasi of "The Guest of the Evening," presented her with a gold key, on behalf of her father. Mr B. Powell (Glenroy) suitably responded on behalf of Miss Price. Mcllroy, of Geraldine, gave an enjoyable bridge party recently as a farewell to Mrs D. M. Paterson who, with Dr. Paterson, will be shortly leaving the district. The rooms were beautifully decorated with bronze and pink chrysanthemums. The hostess wore a grey velvet gown trimmed with lace, and Miss A. Mcllroy a charming frock of deep claret velvet. The guest of honour and Mrs Chrystophers were the prize-winners, and Mrs Paterson was the recipient of a gold-mounted fountain pen as a memento from her friends. Among the guests present were:— Mesdames McKechnie. Elmslie, Paterson, McClure, Scott, Chrystophers, Misses Burnett, L. Hawke, R. Williams, and M. Bruce. VICTORIA LEAGUE. The committee of th'e Victoria League, Canterbury branch, met in the office of the Victoria League. There were present: Mrs Deans (president) in the chair, Mesdames A. Boyle, J. F. Studholme, H. T. J. Thacker, G. M. L. Lester. E. C. Hogg, J. G. L. Vernon, R. Hennah, W S. Bean, G. Hanmer, C. Chilton. Misses Skoglund. R. Tabart (honorary secretary), and Mr F. A. Macbean (honorary treasurer). The question of joining in a donation towards the Earl Haiti appeal was favourably discussed. The appeal is to benefit ex-Service men and dependents, and it has been suggested, that the branches of the Victoria League throughout New Zealand combine in such a worthy anpeal Further particulars will be discussed at next meeting. Sir Harry Lander, it was mentioned, would be invited to the Empire Ball. JOY NIGHT DANCE*. At the Caledonian Hall this evening a joy night carnival dance will be held by Mr Reg Stillwell's Dance Assembly. Many entertaining novelties will be introduced. Mr Bothwell and Miss_ Marjorie Austin will give an ex- '

hibition dance. Mr Bothwell is judge of national dancers at the present Competitions. Jackson's and Bradford's Bands will supply non-stop dance music. Supper will be provided and the gallery will be available for spectators. j A famous French scientist, Professor Charles Riehet, has passed away. He lived a long and busy life, and was a great friend of humanity. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in the year before the war. He wrote poetry and plays, and was a prominent advocate of arbitration between nations It was Professor Jtichet who declared that Napoleon *s lust for power cost France eight million lives.
