PERSONAL. (SPECUL TO THE P3ESS.) GREYMOUTH, May 17. Mr John Milne, of Westport, has taken up a position with the Metallurgical Company at Onakaka. Mr D. Wilmott, who was recently appointed headmaster of the Westport primary school, will take up his duties on June Ist. Mr E. Hayes, of the Reefton District High School, has been appointed to a position on the Dunedin Boys' High School staff. Mr R. Nees, of Wellington, is visiting Grey mouth. Mrs L. Gandell arrived yesterday on a visit to Greymouth. Mr and Mrs N. Smith, formerly of Dillmans, but now residing at Palrnerston North, are on a visit to Kumara. Mrs Colin Macdonald arrived from Christchureh yesterday to visit her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Pascoe. Miss R. Bullman, of Whangarei, is on a visit to her mother at Reefton. Sawmlllar Injured. Mr W. Low, of Kotuku sawmill, met with a very painful accident yesterday, the forefinger of his left hand being stripped of flesh by a rope which he was handling. It is hoped that the finger may be saved. Lake Kanieri Hatchery. The Westland Acclimatisation Society is having Lake Kanieri hatchery reopened immediately in preparation for the ova shortly to arrive from Canterbury. Mr S. W. Ridland will be in charge. The society purposes erecting a residence for the curator on the grounds at Lake Kanieri. Old Resident's Adventure. An old resident of Cape terrace, Mr Samuel Lee, went into the bush in the vicinity of Murphy and Gilbert's sawmill on Tuesday morning, and, failing to return to his hut in the evening, it was surmised, something had happened, with a result that a 6earch party was organised. The bush was thoroughly scoured, and Lee was discovered at a spot three miles off the road, where he had intended spending the night. With the exception that he suffered somewhat from the cold and damp, be was all right. Bowling. • The Greymouth Bowling Club will close for the season to-morrow, and will immediately put in hand the topdressing of the green. The recent fine weather has enabled the green to be used for longer than usual this season, the time approaching closely to the record long season of the club (May 24th) which was established some years ago. Access to Kopara District. The construction of a road to the Kopara, between the Haupiri Junction and Lake Haupiri, which was recently the subject of representations by the member for the district, Mr Jas. O'Brien, to the Government, will be started. Authority has just been received from the Public Works Department by the County Council to expend on the work a sum of £825. The need of this road has been severely felt by Kopara settlers, who hitherto have been handicapped in taking live stock to the market. While the grant of £825 is a straight-out one, the Public Works Department is also prepared to provide one of £214 for the metalling of the ro&d on condition that the County Council provides an eqiial amount for the purpose.

Government Grants. With reference to applications by the Grey County Council for Government grants, Mr T. A. Johnston, District Engineer of Public Works, has advised the Council that its quota for the current year has been fixed at £5900, and care must be taken to see that its expenditure does not exceed that amount in making application for grants. The total of the works can be fixed as 30 per cent, in excess of [the amount stated. The expenditure from the vote for the Haupiri JuneI tion to Haupiri road was additional to the allocation of £5900, and Mr Johnston indicated certain other headings under which additional grants might be forthcoming. Bridges on Grey Coastal Boad. For the following bridges on the Grevmouth to Punakaiki section of the coastal highway, plans have been prepared by Mr J. Higgins, Grey County Engineer, and forwarded to the Mam Highways Board for approval:—Kararoa Creek, £611; Waiwbio, £1230: Canoe Creek, £1729; Moynihan Creek, £630; and Devery Creek, £6lO, mak ing a total of £4BIO. Plans are in hand for bridges at the Fourteen-Mile Creek, Little Granite Creek, and Collins Creek, on the same highway. Grey Defence Bifle Clnto. The eighteenth competition for Mr F. Badger's trophies resulted in a tie between Eflmn. G. Eichardson and T. Groom, with a score of 93. Bflmn. J. McKay was third with a score of 92. Addison's Flat. It is 62 years to-day (May 17th) 1 since ' the Addison's gold rush broke out. There are only a few of the old residents living now who took part in that wonderful rush. Although many thousand of pounds' worth of gold has been extracted from the Flat, it is averred that there are many thousands of pounds' worth still untouched, which will some day be secured by more modern machinery. Swimming Champion. At a juvenile dance last evening at Hokitika as a wind-up to the swimming season, the Newman Cup for the scholars' championship was presented to Master J. Staveley by Mr D. JEvans, president, who complimented the lad on his success, and wished him well in Canterbury, where he is removing shortly. Otira Tunnel Traffic. The amount of coal, timber, stoek, produce, and general merchandise transported through the Otira tunnel this week was 12,777 tons, compared with 10,822 tons for the corresponding week last year, and 9101 tons for the same period in 1927. Westport Dredge. It is reported that the Westport Harbour Board dredge, Eubi Seddon, will shortly be put out of commission, and that the bucket dredge, Maui, with the Eileen Ward, will carry on the work in the harbour. Port of Greymouth. For the four weeks ended April 27th, reports the Bailway Department, the export of timber from Greymonth [was 2,225,100 superficial feet. In the same period the exports in tons of the various mines were:—State 6520, Blackball 4655, Rapahoe 1022, Paparoa W, Dobson 7388, Castle Point 258.
