NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide on the beach this morning at 11.46 o'clock, - and in the river at 12.57 o'clock, and to-morrow at 12.19 p.m. and 1.23 p.m. respectively. School Committee. The School Committee met on Wednesday, Mr F. D. Muirson presiding. A letter was received from Mrs Dalton and Miss C. Bell asking permission to hold piano instruction classes. It was decided to ta'lie'no action in the matter. The Education Board intimated that the work of top-dressing and repairing the . asphalt in the playgrounds was receiving attention. The headmaster reported that the average attendance at the Central and South Schools had been respectively 557.5 and 61.7. Mesdames J. Bellamy and R. O. Brooks were appointed a Visiting Committee. Mr L. W. Besley, a member of the committee, was granted six months' leave, of absence, on the occasion of his visit to England. Surprise Party. During the week a surprise party visited the home of Mr and Mrs A. H. B. Burtt, Brighton terrace, wherea most enjoyable time was spent. Competitions and games were indulged in, while items were contributed by Messrs G. Titchener, L. Scrimshaw, and others. During the evening the visitors presented Mrs Burtt with a very handsome palm bowl and palm. A dainty supper was provided by the ■ ladies. South Brighton Surf Club. At a meeting of the South Brighton Surf Club, Mr S. Grammar presided. Mr P. Knight was appointed assistantsecretary, while Mr C. Sawtell's name was added to the committee. The following were appointed a Social Committee: Messrs Cullen, Gibson, C. and W. Greenwood, E. and H. Nankivell, Knight, Glasson, Grammar, Sawtell, and Campbell. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Miss J. Gibson for her assistance in connexion with the posters, while a vote of thanks was passed to Mr and Mrs Robinson, who had placed their residence at the disposal of the club, and had also provided supper. Y.P.C.T.TJ. At the monthly meeting of the West End Y Branch, the members of the Aranui Branch were entertained at a social, a capital programme, comprising musical items, games, and competitions being thoroughly enjoyed. Ladies' Miniature Bifle Club. In their match against the Railway president's team, the local club were defeated by 526 points to 522, In the first match of the championship Beries the scores were: —Mrs H. Bagg 69, Miss Park, Mesdames Ball, Moses, and McClelland each 66; Mesdames Nicholls and Bishop and Miss A. Moses each 65. Points for medals were secured by Mrs H. Bagg (A Grade), Mrs H. A. Bishop (B Grade), Miss Moses (tyros). Volunteer Fire Brigade. At the annual meeting of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade the DeputySuperintendent, Mr W. EL. Stokes, occu pied the chair. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Superintendent, Mr S. H. McGeorge; deputy-superintendent, Mr W. W. Gray; foreman, Mr* W. Whiteley; junior foreman, Mr C. L. Stokes; branch men, Messrs J. B. Gott, C. Davey, and W. O'Callahan; secretary, Mr J. B. Gott.
