RANGIORA. On Thursday the ladies of the croquet section of the Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club held one of a series of card parties at the residence of Airs \V. Gardner. Progressive euchre was played for prizes given by Mesdames Harper and Gardner. The winners were Mrs H. Jones and Mrs Rowe. William Haines and Josephine Dunn, assisted by Ricardo Cortez, appear to" geth-er in "Excess Baggage" at Everybody's, Town Hall, this evening. On Tuesday the film version of Sir Arthur Pinero's play, "His House in Order," Will be shown, with the great stage star, Tallulah Bankhead, in the lead. "Thoroughbreds" will also be screened. Hi<rh street, Rangiora. Telephone 65M. —a WAIAU. The annual meeting of the Waiau Branch of the Plunket Society was held on Thursday, when Mrs H. DampierCrossley presided over a good attendance. The annual report and balance-sheet, which were adopted as read, showed that the branch had had a very successful year, and was in a highly satisfactory financial position. Officers for the ensuing year were ejected as follows:—President, Mrs H. Dampier-Crossley; Vice-presidents, Mesdames Duncan Rutherford, E. P. H. Burbury, P. Morse, B. A. Chaffey, P. B. Dearden and W. Anderson, senr. Hon. Secretary, Miss M. Anderson; Hon. Treasurer, Mrs G. W. Aldridge; Committee, Mesdames P. B. Dearden, R. II Chapman, D. C. Macfarlane, F. R. Smale, P. R. Dunbar, F. C. Forbes and Dr. F. R. Smale. Trustees, Mesdames G. W. Aldridge and W. D. Banks. Mrs H. Dampier-Crossley and Dr. F. B. Smale were elected honorary life members. A vote of thanks was passed + o Mr E. A. Bobson for having conveyed the nurse from Culverden to Waiau free of charge. It was decided to hold a daffodil show* in the spring for the purpose of augmenting the funds. CUST. St. David's Presbyterian congregation held a social in the Masonic Hall on Wednesday, when, in spite of heavy rain, there was a very large attendance, and a most enjoyable time was spent. A visit was received from the Moderator of the Presbytery, Rev. John Miller, who, in the absence of the Rev. F. Rule through illness, was accompanied by the Rev. J as. Tennent, of Belfast. Both speakers congratulated Mr Simmonds and the congregation on the excellent work being done, and gave cheery addresses. Items were given by Mrs Strutherß, Mrs Simmonds and Miss Alice Wayland. Competitions were won by Mrs Wayland, Miss E. Piper, and Mr Dewar. Games were pl-yed, and a dainty supper was served by the ladies. LEESTON. At the monthly meeting of the Leeston Town Board, there were present: —Commissioners W. Johnston (deputy chairman), S. Johnston, J. H. Jones, D. S. Millar, E. Bohan, and F. B. Clausen. The secretary of the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board forwarded the financial statement and estimates and notified that the levy to be collected this year was £80,882 lis 4d, of which the

Leeston Town Board's contribution was £155 10s. The Leeston lass ot the Workers' Educational Association was granted the continued use of the Board's room for meetings. The Board agreed to take over a small area of land as an addition to the roadway at the corner of Selwyn and Market streets which had been excluded in the process of rounding off the corner. In order to utilise a quantity of tar mixture which the Board had on hand. Commissioner Jones proposed that the foreman should test its suitability for footpath construction. His suggestion was that a small stretch of footpath should be laid with it in Station street, and that, if the experiment proved successful. the wofk should be continued, and other footpaths laid while the supply lasted. It was agreed to keep the project in view until the springtime. A well-patronised social in aid of the picnic fund of the Leeston School was held on Tuesday evening. Dancing was carried on in the mainroom to the music of Mr J. C. Mercer's Orchestra. Miss S. Fussell, assisted by Mr A. Fussell, played for extra dances. A Monte Carlo waltz, for which the prizes were given by Mr and Mrs C. Bishop, was won by Mrs Bishop and Mr J. Miller. The presence of a number of Southbridge patrons was appreciated. . Sir Thomas Mackenzie, a director or the National Mortgage and Agency Company, visited the Leeston and Southbridge branches of the company on* Thursday, accompanied by Mr Brydon, Christnh-urch manager. Mr A McPherson, of Lakeside, has returned from a visit to his daughter, Mrs N. Densem, of Westland. Mr Gordon Morgan, of the firm of Morgan, Watson, and Co., Ltd., who has been for several months in the North Island, where he acquired a farm, is on a visit to Leeston. Mr W. Bohan, of Leeston, is on a visit to Auckland. _ Mr J. Daly, who was in the railway service at Leeston some time ago, and who now has a business at Westport, visited Leeston this week, accompanied by Mr W. Mitchell, also of Westport. Through slipping when she alighted from the evening train from Christchurch at the Leeston station on Wednesday, Mrs W. McVinnie fell and sustained ' serious injuries. One of her legs was broken, and the other was badly cut about. A young child, whom she was carrying, dropped from her grasp but was unhurt. The train had come almost to a standstill when Mrs McVinnie prepared to step off, b:ut as she did so, it gave a final jerk forward, causing her fall.

KILLINCHY. A "gift evening" in honour of Miss Bene Lemon on the eve of her marriage was held in the Killinchy Ball. Mr J. E. Miller, on behalf of the residents, conveyed to the guest the good wishes of all present, and asked her to accept the gifts which they had brought. Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs Norquay and Mr W. Chap-

pell. Mr C. Tod, prior to his marriage, was entertained by the members of the Killinehy Library Committee and other friends. Mr W. Chappell referred to Mr Tod's service as secretary and as a member of the committee, and presented him with a case of pipes.

DOYLESTON. In recognition of his services as secretary to the Doyleston Athletic Club, Mr E. Macdonald, who is leaving the district, was entertained at a smoke concert on Thursday night by members and supporters of the «»V.™' J. R. Codsell preided. In proposing the guest's health, the pres dent referred to his enthusiasm and ability, and presented him with? ™.2 °" «*" half of the T >«**>*£ supported by Messrs W. O-,«£"£» H T. Stephens, W. G Fusse '. Pratt, J. S. Brake, and G Aitkeii. Mr Macdonald responded, saying that the work had given him pleasure. LITTLE RIVER. Miss R. Ellison (Dunedin) is the guest of Miss Him Parata. At the Coronation library on Thursdav afternoon the members of the Girls' Friendly Society met to make a presentation to Miss Valmai Reynolds, who has been secretary for the past two years and who has resigneu owing to her approaching marriage. Miss Bromley-cScks (Chrißtchurch) gave an interesting address on i» Aims and Objects of the Girls; Friendly Society." Mrs Wagstaff (Christchuich) also spoke. Mrs Hay, on behalf ot the members, asked Miss Reynolds to accept an afternoon tea service witn the best wishes of those present. Miss Reynolds suitably replied. A delightful afternoon tea was served. Mr J. Pollock has returned home, having quits recovered from his illness. WOODEND. At the annual meeting of the Hall Committee Mr C. Pateman presided. Reports on the year's working disclosed a surplus of income over expenditure of £2B, the revenue from rent alone amounting to more than £9O. It was further stated that the hall was clear of debt. In view of this fact, making possible a reduction in the number of trustees, the resignations of Messrs A. Anderson, B. Archer, S. Gibbs, and C. Pateman were accepted, with thanks for past services. The present trustees are Messrs J. Ballinger, J. Forbes, and J. Little, who, with Mesdames C. F.der, G. Gibling, IX Shea, Messrs G. Gibline (hon. secretary), H. Little, and J. McConaghey were elected the committee for the ensuing year, with Mr Ballinger as chairman and treasurer. During the year a new cloak-room for men was erected.
