Mannhardt, and asking that facilities be placed in his way to observe educational institutions in Canterbury. It was resolved to comply with the request, and to extend any courtesies possible. Professor H. S. Dettmann, formerly Professor of Classics at the Auckland University College, now headmaster of the Svdney Grammar School, arrived in Auckland on the Ulimaroa to spend a holiday visiting old friends. For L 6 years Professor Dettmann held his post in Auckland. Prior to his first arrival in New Zealand he was a master at the Sydney Grammar School, and he returned six years ago to take charge of the big institution. At the last meeting of the Education Board in Wellington notification was received from the Department of Education that Professor J. W. Mannhardt, who was accredited by the German Government, would shortlv be visiting New Zealand in the course of a world tour for the purpose of studying educational questions, and it had been re? quested that he should be given facilities for observing the working of the education system of the Dominion.
