EXCURSION TO OTIRA.

GORGE ROAD NEARLY CLEARED. This week the Southern Alps have presented a beautiful spectacle, a heavy fall of snow last Saturday having clothed them in winter's raiment. A desire to enjoy the beauties of the mountains at close quarters has evidently inspired the numerous enquiries and bookings which are being received by the Railway Department for tomorrow's excursion to Otira, which is the first of the winter series. One of the slips caused by the earthquake at the Otira end of the gorge has not yet been cleared, but a track has been made over it, and no doubt the tramp from Arthur's Pass to Otira will be undertaken by most of the excursionists. On this occasion refreshments will not be obtainable at Arthur's Pass. The express carriages which will be in use will be steamheated.
