FARMERS ON TOUR.
JOURNEY TO BLENHEIM. (SPSCIA.L TO THI PRESS.) BLENHEIM, May 7. The Canterbury farmers had an ideal day for the commencement of their eight days' tour of the Marlborough and Nelson provinces. About 170, representing districts as far south as Waimate, left Christchurch by the morning train, and recruits picked up at th« various stations increased the total at Parnassus to just on 200. The party detrained at Parnassus, where a fleet of cars was in readiness and the journey was continued on to Blenheim hy motor. The picturesque run through the Hundalee and coastal country to Kaikoura. where the party lunched,* and on through the rich grazing lands of Southern Marlborough was thoroughly enjoyed, only a small section of the visitors having previously undertaken this trip. Blenheim was reached about 6.30. The party will stay at Blenheim until Saturday morning.
A public welcome was extended to the visitors to-night by the Borough Council, the provincial executive of the Farmers' [mion, and Mr E. Healy, M.P. for the district. To-morrow the attractions will be a launch trip around the Sounds.
A noticeable feature of the trip from Hundalee northwards is the amount of road improvement work being carried out. At the point mentioned there are some hairpin bends and narrow roads and much-needed widening is being done to increase their safety. Extra men arrived to-dav to start work north of Kaikoura. Similar improvements are being effected over a considerable stretch of the road.
