RANGIORA. Interesting contests should be witnessed at the Loburn Collie Club's annual trials, to be held on Thursday and Friday, 88 entries having been received. These include last year's winners. A large attendance of spectator* is anticipated. A very enjoyable social evening was nelU on Saturday in the Methodist Sunday School Hall, where, at the invitation of the Rev. S. Henderson, a large number of young people was preMmt. The evening was spent in games and competitions, and items were given >y Mm Dorothy Ayers ahd Miss Edna none. Following the lives of the players, it transpires that they are more vaxied and dramatic than the parts they play on tho stage, and the four principals in "Shooting Stars" watch the influences of treachery and tragedy, comedy and romance, strut their hour. On Thursday, tho mystery thriller, "The Haunted Houso," will be shown, a bright and spooky comedy in which Flora Finch, Chester Conklin, Larry Kent, and Thelnta Todd have important parts. Tlie Cheviot footballers visited Kaikoura on Saturday, when junior and senior matches took place. There was an excellent attendance, the weather being beautifully fine. The Cheviot juniors won by 21 points to nil, while tho senior game resulted in a draw. Tries were scored by Robertson (Kaikoura) and Hendren (Cheviot). Mr Leicester Harris acted as referee for the junior game, and Mr J. J. Mackle for the senior. Kaikoura won at Culvetden on the previous Saturday, and drew on Saturday, giving them 3 points in tho Hurunui competition. At the meeting of the Progress League on Saturday afternoon, Mr T. Harlo, who presided, gave a resume of the business transacted at the conference held in Blenheim recently, and also dealt with the land proposals of the Southland Expansion League. The "question of price of manures raised a deal of discussion, the League having made enquiries to ascertain why fertilisers were so much cheaper in the North Island than in the South. It was decided to Jnvite farmers to send in to the League the approximate quantities of manures required, with a view to pooling and securing a vessel to bring the fertilisers to Kaikoura direct.

Robertson gave a degree lecture, and conferred minor degrees on four of the brethren. Nominations for the offices for the next qiyiTter were received. One new member was proposed for initiation. The newly-formed footpath in Beach street will be greatly appreciated by the residents, as owing to the heavy increase of motor traffic the road was somewhat dangerous for pedestrians. OXFORD. At a meeting of the Oxford W.C.T.TJ. tho balance-sheet of the refreshment tent at the show was read and adopted. A resolution was passed thanking all those who had contributed towards the success of the catering, either by gifts or nersonal help. It was decided to send a donation of £2 to the Oxford "Y" branch. In accordance with the wish of the Dominion W.C.T.U., it was decided to make the May meeting an occasion of special intercession for peace among the nations of the world, and to ask the Rev. A. Simmonds to give an address. The secretary reported that a Band of Hope meeting had been held, when a good and varied programme was provided by members, of the Baptist S.S., the address being given by the Rev. H. E. Turner. OHOKA. On Friday night the annual b.a'll given by the Oddfellows drew a large attendance. Music was provided by JohnBton's Jazz Band from Kaiapoi. Mr M. N. Ward acted as M.C., with assistance from other members of the Lodge. The "Bring and Buy" Social held by the ladies of the Anglican Church on Saturday afternoon was most successful, and resulted in a profit of £8 for the Guild funds. SPRINGFIELD. On Thursday evening the members of the Presbyterian Church held their annual harvest thanksgiving and sale of produce in tho hall. Miss Bates's concert party from Sheffield provided an enjoyable programme. After the sale of produce, supper was served. The sum of £lO was collected. A meeting was held on Friday afternoon to decide whether the members of the Anglican and Presbyterian Churches would again conduct the luncheon booth at the local dog trials. After some discussion it was agreed not to take on the catering this year. Mr Rudkin, judge for the Forbury Park Trotting Club, leaves this week for Dunedin. Mr R. Innes leaves on Thursday for the West Coast, where Jie is to act as judge for the Ikamatua Collie Club. Mrs Lapthorne and Miss Olive Lapthorne have returned from a visit to Woodbury and Geraldine. Mrs Shadriek, of Cheviot, is visiting her mother, Mrs Dorward, Springfield. Brilliant sunshine favoured the opening of the hockey season at Springfield, when the Darfield ladies defeated the local club by 5 goals to nil. DARFIELD. J The annual meeting of the Darfield-Kimborley-Greendale sub-branch of the Malvern Plunket Society was held in the Darfield Memorial Hall on Friday. The president, Mrs H. A. Knight, presided over a largo attendance of members. The annual report stated that the Society had had a very successful year, j The monthly meetings had been well at- j tended, and the work of Nurse Finlayson was very much appreciated. The work j hod increased considerably, especially in j the Greendale district, where a social afternoon was now held every third Friday to enable the nurse to meet the mothers and babies. During the year the nurse had visited a largo number of mothers, babies, and older children at their homes, and the following visits were made at the Plunket rooms:— Adults 472, babies 21G, older children 156. The committee desired to thank the Horticultural Soriety for allowing i the Plunket Society to supply refresh- j ments at the spring and autumn shows. ' The proceeds had been a great help. ! It was arranged that honorary collectors canvass the district for annual subscriptions. ] SOUTHBROOK. j The first meeting of the newly-formed | branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the I Methodist schoolroom. Mrs C. R. I Thwaites was in the chair. After devotional exercises, Miss Henderson, I district president, gave an inspiring i talk on Prohibition in America. At * the close of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Miss Henderson for her address.

ASHLEY BANK. On Saturday the Woodend basketbailers motored to Ashley to play a return match with the Ashley B team. After a close game the home team was successful in winning with a majority of two points. Miss Percy ably refereed the game. At the conclusion, afternoon tea was served. The Ashley A team journeyed to Sefton to try conclusions with the local team. The match resulted in a draw. Farmers are delivering grain and potatoes to the railway station in large quantities. Fat sheep are being hurried to the markets in goodly numbers. The weather although clear, is very threatening and all work is being rushed ahead in preparation for the winter. AKAROA.
