SERIOUS CHARGE.
ALLEGED MAIMING OF MAN. ] (I'aESS ASSOCIATION TELEG3.VMJ BLENHEIM, May 6. It is reported that a sensational incident, possibly without precedent in the Dominion, occurred in the suburb of Yelverton on Saturday afternoon, it being alleged that, following upon a dispute in regard to family matters, a > young man was knocked out and, while in a state of unconsciousness, was operated upon with a pocket-knife and maimed for life. It is further alleged that, upon completion of his purpose, the assailant bandaged his victim and | put him to bed in his house, but, being unable to stop the flow of blood from the wounds inflicted, finally became alarmed and, after a lapse of four or five hours, summoned medical attention. The victim was then re- ! moved to hospital, where he is now \ lying. As a sequel to the alleged occurrence, William Henry Osgood appeared in ! the Magistrate's Court this morning charged: (1) That on May 4th, at Ye!- | verton, he did assault one, Archibald ; Ben rue Meek, so as to cause actual ; bodily harm, and (2) that on the ] same date, with intent to maim he : did disfigure the said Archibald Bennie Meek. Senior-Sergeant Clarkson, who re- ; presented the police, made no statement in regard to the facts of the j cum}. He applied for a remand for ; eight days, and indicated that a i further remand would then be applied J ior. He a)«o asked that the first | charge should be withdrawn and sug- j ge.-ted that the remaining charge was J a very serious one and that the amount ! >f bail should be heavy. The Magistrate granted a remand : and fixed bail at £4OO, and one surety \ of a similar amount. " :
