"MOVIETONE" FILMS.

NEW ZEALAND CONTRACT. IFBOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, March 27. The "Daily Telegraph" film correspondent writes: — The announcement that Western Electric hare signed a contract permitting '-Movietone" films produced by their method to be slipwn in NewZealand cinemas, by means of the tfritish Talking Pictures' apparatus, will, if confirmed, be hailed with satisfaction by many owners of cinemas in this country. Hitherto, representatives in England of Western Electric have refused to giant such permission. They have stated repeatedly that they would allow films made by their method to be shown only by means of their own apparatus, or by apparatus, which, in their opinion, would give the same results. Conversely, they refuse to authorise the exhibition by their special projecting apparatus of films produced by any other "sound" system.

It has been contended that these restrictions, if maintained, would nullify to a large extent the provisions of' the Quota Bill. They have formed a subject of various recent questions in Parliament, and have been investigated by a comniittee of the Federation of British Industries set up specially for the purpose. The indications now are that this bugbear of "inter-changeability,'' as.it is termed, may be settled to the satisfaction of all concerned.
