COUNTY COUNCILS

KOWAI. At the monthly meeting of the Kowai County Council there were present: Crs. J. D. Wyllie (chairman), J. Fleming, W. A. Kelcher, J. H. James, I. P. Croft, W. H. Hale, and T. Hanna. It was decided that a double row of 12in concrete pipes be placed across Markhatn street, Amberley, and an estimate be obtained of the cost of concrete kerbing and channelling the footway to Kidd's right-of-way. Arising out of the surveyor's report, the clerk was instructed to ascertain from Mr Langbei» if the survey of land to be taken from Mr Watt for road deviation could be completed and the land fenced before the Public Works gang left the locality; also to ascertain the cost of laying down a permanent highway from the Ashley river boundary to Leithfield, and the terms of payment of the amount which the Council would be called upon to contribute to the work. It was decided to write to frontagers on Bock Creek from the Town Board boundary to HadleT's corner on Stanton's road, to clean the creek where the same traverses their property. A deputation from the Leithfield Domain Board, consisting of Messrs J. Russell, W. Boyce, H. May, and Stewart (Commissioner of Crown Lands), submitted a plan of I proposed roadway 40ft wide around the new I portion of the Domain, leaving the centre for I parking of cars and planting of shelter trees. The estimated length of the roadway was 30 chains, and the area of the ground eight acres. It was decided that the Council approve of tto Domain Board's plan, and when the road is lormed and completed to the satisfaction of the Council the road would then be taken over by the Council »• a public road. . The Amberley School Committee requested the Council to ask the business people ol Amberley to observe a close holiday on Saturday, 23rd inst., being the date of the school picnic. It was decided to comply with the request. The Ashburton County Conncil wrote that a conference on hospital levies, main highway funds, and a South Island Counties Association would be held in Ashburton on March 14th, and asked the Council to be represented. The letter was received. Mr A. 6. George wrote accepting the Council's offer to lease the gravel reserve on Mt. Brown road. The clerk was instructed to write to Mr George explaining the P"*'" tion that had arisen in connexion with tne reserve. It was resolved that application be made to the Goveraor-in-Council that that p°J''° n of Courage's road fronting lands owned by Mr Brown and Mr Holmes b» exempt from the provisions of the Public Works Act, 1928, dealing with the setting back of frontages upon subdivision of lands on narrow roads.
