CANTERBURY RAILWAYS.

FIRST IN NEW ZEALAND. The Christchurch-Lyttelton line was the first railway constructed in New Zealand. First sod turned, in Heatheote Valley, June 17th, 1801, Opened to Ferrymead, December Ist, 1863. Opened to Lyttelton in 1867; first passenger train, December 9th, 1867. First sod of first railway in Australia and New Zealand turned near Sydney, N.S.W., on July 3rd, 1850. The first railway in New Zealand, a section of which was operated by electricity, was the Otira tunnel section of the East and West Coast line (Midland railway), partly in Canterbury and partly in Westland. The second section of the New Zealand railways to be operated electrically is the ChrlstchnrchLyttelton line. Canterbury first in steam railways and first in electric railways.
