BIG INCREASE.
CHRISTMAS TELEGRAMS
The Christchurch Telegraph Office experienced a busy time on Christmas Eve, no fewer than 83 operators being required to deal with the business, which was over 60 per cent, in excess of that of last year. The figures are as follows, those for the corresponding day of 1927 being also shown for the purpose of comparison : F 1928. Forwarded. Received. Transmitted. 6,440. 10,589. 19,360. 1927. 4,133. 6,411. 11,938.
Forwarded telegrams mean those •which were handed over the counter at the Chief Post Office, received telegrams were those delivered locallv by message boys from the Central Office, and transmitted telegrams were thoso from other offices for onward transmission, really representing two messages but only counted once in the return quoted. Large quantities of mail matter were also handled, but the authorities did not keep a record of the number, which, however, was much in excess of that of last Christmas.
