SUMNER ITEMS.

i Hre Brigade Fete. For the purpose of raising funds to send a team to the fire brigade demonstration at Hokitika in February, the members of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade organised a very successful fete on the beach on Boxing Day. The numerous stalls did excellent business, and the side-shows all received a large measure of attention. The members of the Sumner Brigade are well known for their prowess, and their successes at the demonstrations held from year to year fully warrant every support being given to their efforts in raising funds for the purpose of sending a team away. Bathing Fool. The formation of a safe bathing pool near the Cave Rock is steadily progressing, the sand-bank on the seaward side having consolidated considerably. At low tide the pool is very popular. The sight of people walking out to the beacon and round towards Shag Hock on firm sand, where not very long ago a dangerous channol flowed out to sea, is rather unusual. The Holidays. The demand for houses for the Christmas and New Year holidays has been exceptional, and at the present time there are large numbers of visitors in the borough. While for a seaside holiday the weather has not been of the best, devotees of sea-bathing have missed very few days. • The Main Eoad. Although the road surface from Sumner to Bamford street is in excellent condition, the state of the Ferry road from there to Fitzgerald avenue is nothing but a succession of bumps and holes. To avoid this bad portion many Sumner motorists turn to the right at the Woolston Fire Station and proceed along the Canal Reserve and Cashel street. Strange as it may seem, this route is only a little over one-eighth of a mile longer than the other.
