CARNEGIE CORPORATON. PROPOSED GRANT TO AUSTRALIA. (FltOlt OUE OWN COEBESPOKDI'.KT.) SYDNEY, December 18. The Carnegie Corporation, which has for some years expended large sums in promoting educational research in other parts of the world, is now prepared to consider fabourably the extension of this service to Australia. • This decision, it was annoucne,d yesterday, was the outcome of the visit to Australia of Dr. J. E. Eussell, former Deai. of Teachers' College, Columbia University, and a request from Australian educationists f warded by Mr Frank Tate, former Director of Education, Victoria. The corporation states: "If and when it is perfect an organisation capable, of administering funds, and of directing scientific. investigations, the corporation will consider making a grant of £SOOO to £6OOO annually from January Ist, 1930, for a period of ten yeas. The corporation will also entertain an application for an annual grant in addition to the amount suggested al ove, sufficient to meet reasonable administrative expenses and the salary of an executive officer."
Mr Tate, Professors Alexander Mackie, and H. T. Lovell, of the University of Sydney, have been asked to act as an executive committee and are taking the necessary action to formulate a. constitution for the establishment of a Commonwealth Institute for Educational Service and Research.
While it is undoubted that substantial progress has been made in developing educational services in Australia during the past twenty-five years, it is felt that scientific research into educational problems should correct and i-upplement what is being done by teachers and administrators. The result of inquiries carried out elsewhere are not necesarily applicable to Australian conditions, and the proposal now made will afford an opportunity for keen students to assist in directing educational progress throughout the Commonwealth.
