Second Round—Miss G. Jellett and A. Borrows beat Mrs Findlay and Captain J, L. Findlay, 9-8. NOTES ON THE PLAY. Men's Singles. * B. B. Loughnan went through, his first match in happy-go-lucky style, and although the play was marked by many errors on each side, Loughnan had command whenever he exerted himself. He won by the good margin of 6-1, 6-1. H. Dymond staged -two magnificent recoveries in his match against R. Browning. The latter appeared to have, the first set well in hand when ho led 4-1, but Dymond made every post a winning post and took five games in succession to win the opening set. Again 'in the second session Browning took the first five games, in four of these his opponent tailing to win a stroke. Dymond, however, tightened up his game and driving with precision he forced Browning into errors. Browning won the odd game at 5-5, but the next three went to Dymond and with them, the match. D. A. McCaskey began very well against A. B. Loughnan in the third round, but he was not sure enough, and Loughnan improved as the game progressed and won in two straight sets with the loss of only three gariies; McCaskey started on attack, driving forcefully to the sides with telling shots. • Loughnan was. rather listless at the onening, but brightened to Dlay a crisper same. 'He had all his share of the luck, too, in the second set. B. B. Loughnan came, through the third round easily with his defeat of Dickson. 6-0. 6-2. He did not have to exert himself with the effort

W. S. Somerville and G. Burn played brisk tennis, both driving vigorously.Somerville won 6-2, 6-2, but Burn's exhibition was a much better one than the scores indicate. His volleying was hi<: chief weakness. It took 46 games in three hard-fought sets before Boddy" gained the verdict over ifunns, 5-7, 6-4, 13-11. Munns showed surprising form, considering that he has not had much tennis this season, and this went against him in the prolonged duel. Boddy was the more aggressive, but Munns contested every pojnt with steady play. After holding Crawshaw well in the first set, Mercer fell away, and Crawshaw won the second to love. Crawshaw was showing good form, his chop strokes particularly troubling Mercer. The first set was even five all, Craw-

Shaw taking the next two games. Thereafter Mercer did not score. Women's Singles. Miss M. Sowden showed good form in her match with Miss M. Kankin, which she won fairly easily. After being erratic in thp beginning, Miss Sowden settled down to steady t&nnis. Miss Eankin was enterprising, but never gained the upper hand. Miss D. Scott had not much difficulty in defeating Miss P. Hamilton in two straight sets. She plays a forceful game, and after being 2 all in the first set, won the next four games. This form she maintained till the end. Men's Doubles. Goss and Greenwood got home against Somerville and Crawshaw. but they did not have it all their own way, especially in the second set, which went to 9-7. As in the earlier matches, the two veterans showed good combination, but the younger pair were hitting very hard arid placing to advantage. Munns and Orbell fought hard against. Hall and Findlay to win in two advantage sets. It was a good sporting game, in which all four made the play, and took chances. Hall . and Anderson were nqt in it in their first set with the L'oughnan brothers, but the second was a different story. Hall and Anderson drew level at 3 all," and thence they took game for game till the score reached 6 all. Loughnan brothers took the next two games, the set, and match. They were playing good tennis, and should go a long way. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME.
