Jones, left last evening for Nelson to attend a ten day camp, conducted by the Anglican Bible Class Union. Excursion to Timaru. Owing to the uncertain state of the weather yesterday, not many people ventured away from home and the trots were the chief attraction in Ashburton. Twenty local residents joined the special train from Christchurch to Timaru for the opening of the Bay Carnival, and a larger crowd would have' made the trip had the outlook been brighter. Infectious Diseases. During the past week the County has been fairly free from diseases of an infectious nature, but one case of scarlet fever from Anama was notified to the Health Inspector yesterday. Christmas Carols. Asa result of the carolling campaign conducted by the Ashburton Silver Band on Christmas morning over £6O was netted, which will be devoted to the fund to defray the expenses of the band' at the contest at Wanganui, next year. The band will continue it's efforts in the country districts at New Year. Picnics. The annual picnic of the Wakanui Lodge, 1.0. G.T.,. was held on the farm of. Messrs Cochrane Bros. yesterday afternoon, when there was an attendance of over 100 members and friends. In spite of the unfavourable' weather an enjoyable time was spent. . The combined picnic of Ashburton and Eakaia"Young People's Christian Temperance Unions, which was to have .been held a\Tinwald, was postponed. '* Girl Guides' Camp.

About 55 members of the'first and second companies of the Ashbarton Girl Guides leave for Winchester Park today to join the Timaru Guides in their annual camp,' which lasts until January 11th; The Ashbarton girls-'will: be-under the control of Captain I. Hillier, assisted by acting-Captain M. Jennings and Lieut. E. Cuff. The caihp will.be under the supervision of Miss Cooper, Captain of St. .Mary's Bangers, TimarUj and camp adviser for the South' Island. As an indication of the practical interest taken in the movement in" Ashburton,: several local residents have made donations of provisions for the camp, "which will be open on Thursdays and Sundays and a special invitation is being expended to localpeople to make an inspection. .
