OCTOBER'S DUST STORM.
SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION. (PR2S3 ASSOCIATION TELZGBAM.) WELLINGTON, December 24. . The dust storm which visited New Zealand in October, though not unique, was sufficient to be worth scientific investigation, which has been done by the Department'of Scientific and Industrial Research. Tho last previous occasion when' such a storm was recorded was in November, 1902. The dust both on that and the occasion of last October was shown conclusively, to be of Australian origin and similar to the red clay found over a large area of the bed of the southern Tasman Sea, it being supposed the deposit is really composed of dust blown from Australia. Dr. Marshall estimates that October's duststorm fell over, an area of at least 10 000 square miles, and the deposit was approximately 100,000 tons. Dr. Kidson sftvs the conditions in Australia at the time were favourable for raising vast quantities of dust to high altitudes. The speed of travel New Zealandwards probably varied between 25 and 60 miles and hour. The thunderstorms experienced m the Dominion at the time, ■ which in many cases were very severe, were almost certainly associated with the presence of dust in"the. atmosphere. • .
