The chairman said it gave him great pleasure to see so many of the residents present to do honour to the occasion. The number present was a good indication" of the high esteem in which their member and guest that evening was held. Mr Sullivan had worked hard in the interests of the Borough and the district as a whole. Speaking for himself, which he thought was permissible, ho hoped that when the Mayoral election was being held in March next, that those present would rally around him in the same member as they had done for their member of Parliament. On behalf of Mr Sullivan's late committee, Mr E. A. Leaver (chairman) presented Mr Sullivan with a wallet suitably inscribed, while Miss Eileen Eeddington presented Mrs Sullivan with a beautiful bouquet. Replying on behalf of his wife and himself Mr Sullivan said he desired to thanfi most sincerely the members of his late committee for the beautiful bouquet presented to Mrs Sullivan and the gift to himself, which he would treasure. Words failed him in expressing Lis gratitude to Ms committee and supporters for the loyal feeling that had been displayed. The work of the committee was carried out enthusiastically, thoroughly, and well, resulting in his obtaining the largest 'majority received by any candidate in the Dominion, The political situation at the moment was a most intensely interesting one, and there were very grave matters indeed to be determined. He realised that he had a very hard task to carry out all that would be expected of him. On a no-confiden<Je motion he would vote against the Government. He had at all times during the recent contest received the greatest kindness, courtesy, and consideration from his supporters and those who were opposed to him. At the conclusion of his remarks those present stood up and sang "For He s a Jolly Good Fellow." Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., also spoke. During the evening items were given by: Mr B. Dean, the Misses Gladys and Clarice Weavers, Miss Hull, Mr A. Dey, and others. The music for the dance was supplied by Mr Carl Diehl's orchestra, while Mr Diehl was M.C. South Brighton Gala.
