WAIMATE, November 29. The smart turn out of the fire brigade was responsible for preventing a good deal of damage this afternoon, when fire broke out in the drapery stock of Mr Campbell, who occupies one of the-Waimate Auction Company s shops in High street. The alarm was given at 2.20, when smoke was seen issuing from the rear of the shop. The firemen entered by the front door and the draught fanned the fire, which had a good hold Flames burst through the' roof and dense volumes of smoke poured out of the open door, making the work rather difficult for a while, but a stream of water played on the heart of the fire, which was in the showroom, soon extinguished, the outbreak. The principal damage was to: the stock in the showroom, the re-' maindcr of the stock in the shop and storeroom at the rear being damaged by smoke . and water. Fireproof - walls prevented the spread of the fire to the adjoining shops. The damage done to the building was slight, consisting chiefly of the destruction of the ceiling of the middle room and the charring of the lining of the walls. Don't be a loser.
