arrive, and with darkness approaching the outlook is not pleasant. Dozens of steamers and numerous Government craft are racing to the scene. Information received at the coastguard headquarters indicates that the accidont to the Vestris was probably caused by her cargo shifting. Major Inouye, Japanese ConSul at Buenos Ayres, was among the passengers. The abandonment of the vessel began at 12.50 and lasted thirty-five minutes, with the seas running high as the small boats put out. The captain notified the destroyer Davis that just prior to leaving the ship the seas were washing over the decks.—Australian Press Association.[The Vestris, a British twin-screw vessel of 10,494 tons, was built by Workman, Clark and Co., Belfast, in 1912, and is owned by Lamport and Holt, Ltd., managers of the Liverpool, Brazil, and River Plato Steam Navigation Co., her port of registry being Liverpool.] AN UNCONFIRMED REPORT. (Received November 13th, 7.20 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 12. Lamport and Holt announced that an unconfirmed message stated that the Ohio Maru had rescued all the passengers and the crew, but the message is received with reserve, due to the extreme difficulty of rescuing the passengers in a rough sea.-—Australian Press Association. RESCUERS ARRIVE. NO TRACE OF COMPLEMENT. (Received November 13th, 7.20 p.m.) NEW TORE, November 12. There was no trace of the passengers or crew of the liner Vestris when the first of several rescue ships arrived at the point where the vessel was earlier reported to be sinking. New York police headquarters have reported that they received a radio message advising that the Ohio Maru arrived at the position indicated and found no traoe of the Veßtria or its survivors. The steamship Porto Rico reported to the Radio Marine' Corporation that it arrived at the position where the Vestris foundered, but could locate neither the hulk nor lifeboats. Further messages received directly from the Ohio Maru and Porto Rico indicate that the vessels had been searching vainly for some time, finding no trace of survivors in the heavy, rainy weather. The ships advised that they will continue to search, but earlier reports are now given Blight credence. It is interesting to note that the sole Australian passenger, Mr Davies, nearly decided not to take ship when the vessel sailed on Saturday, in view of Mr Hoover's trip to South America on November 19th. Mr Davies was on the point of cancelling his passage in order to accompany the President-elect as a journalist, but due- to the pressing nature of office business, it is understood that the proprietors of "La Anacion" suggested that Mr Davies should sail forthwith. —Australian Press Association, United Service.
