INTOXICATED MOTORIST.

LICENSE CANCELLED FOR TWO YEARS.

As a result of accepting the mvitation of a man and a woman, whom he had given a ride into town, to visit an hotel, a young man appeared in the Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of being intoxicated while in of a motor-car. Alexander Pendrigh, aged 26 years, pleaded guilty

to the cliarge. Mr B. D. Mosley, S.M., was on the bench, and Mr W. F. Tracy appeared for defendant. _ iSub-inspector Lfitzpatrick _ said that defendant had been _ driving along Lower High street in an easterly direction on his wrong side, and . when near the intersection of Barbadoes street he came into collision with a motor-cyclist and pillion rider, who were proceeding in the opposite direction. The rider of the machine had suffered injury and was still in hospital. The police arrived on the scene of the ar-ciaent and found defendant helplessly intoxicated. The accident occurred on Show Day, a day on which there was a great deal of traihc on the road A woman who was m the car was also drunk, while another passenper, a man, had cleared out. Mr Tracy said that defendant had attended the Show, where he was asked by a man and woman for a ride into town. He had not known the people, but he had given them a ride in return for the ride the passengers had insisted upon defendant visiting a hotel. Defendant had crossed to nis wrong side to pass a cyclist, but had been unable to miss the motor-cyclist. He asked the Court to take into consideration the fact that defendant baa been in gaol since Friday . In imposing the penalty, the Magistrate said that such practices would not be tolerated. Pendrigh was convicted and fined £2O, in default one month's imprisonment, and his drivers license was cancelled_ and he was prohibited from obtaining another until May 31st, 1930.
