SWIMMING.

WEISMULLER MAY VISIT CHRISTCHURCH.

ARRANGEMENTS TO BE MADE.

Should suitable terms be arranged, there is .a possibility of -John Weismuller/.world's champion sprint swimmer, visiting Christchurch next month. ■ If satisfactory, arrangements are made, it is hoped that he will be available for two carnivals. The matter was discussed at last evening's meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, when a letter on the subject was received from the New Zealand Swimming Council. The Centre accepted the Council's offer. The New- Zealand Council wrote stating that John Weismuller, world's sprint champion, was available for. a brief tour in New Zealand, arriving at Auckland on December 4th and leaving for Australia at the end of that- month. The Council wished to know whether the Centre desired an appearance if a tour in New Zealand was arranged. The Council was yet unable to quote terms, but as Weismuller would be accompanied by an American manager all the way, the appearance would probably be more costly than with the average of touring swimmers. The Council would decide on Thursday night as to whether or not it would go on with the tour. Mr T. H. Harker said that they I should' certainly have Weismuller, provided the terms were satisfactory. If j possible- they should hold two carnivals, but nothing definite could be arranged until the Centre had come to terms. The chairman (Mr M. E.. Lyons) said that he considered it a matter that .should be considered by a sub-commit-tee. Mr S: Hollander said that they could not expect better terms than £IOO for two appearances in Christchurch. The chairman pointed out that they could not turn down the Council's terms, as the Centre had been asking for overseas tourß for some time. It would be better to run the carnival at a small loss rather than not have one at all. The Council asked for the Centre's decision immediately, so the Centre would practically have to decide the matter in the dark. • Mr L. Annand moved that the Centre accept the Council's offer and that the details of the tour be left to the Centre's delegate to arrange. The motion was carried.
