SUMNER PIER.
REPAIRS TO BE EFFECTED. Many people have speculated about the ultimate fate of the Sumner pier, and have expressed astonishment at the Borough • Council's apparent, lack of interest thereof. But a waiting policy was adopted by the.Council so that the work could be proceeded with when it was found that the scouring process had stopped.' Prom time to time the Borough Engineer has taken soundings, and his report to the Council last evening showed that in places the sand is building up again. The. soundings taken at low water showed that at the centre pile at the end of the boat shed there was 21ft 6in of water down to a hard bottom. The depth at the pile nearest the shore was 6in. "The work can now g»ite safely be put in hand," said the Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson). "The channel scour is now past its worst, and, in fact, the sand has built up again to the extent of four feet since these soundings were taken. Our duty was to wait for the maximum amount of scour so as not to spend any money twice. Ido not think there is any doubt that authority to extend the overdraft to meet this contingency can be obtained." ,It was decided that the. Engineer should be instructed to go ahead with the work as soon as financial arrangements were made.
