, PERSONAL. Messrs E. L. Wiglcy and H. Hall have returned to Timaru. from a business visit to Auckland \and Tongariro Park. Messrs H. Maxwell (Auckland) and M. Kebble (Wellington) are among.the guests at the Hydro Grand Hotel. - Magistrate's Court. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr C. E. Orr Walker, S.M., David Johnston was fined £l, in default 24 hours' imprisonment for drunkenness. .. For allowing a chimney to catch fire in the premises of the Club Hotel, Kobert Forest Marshall, who. appeared voluntarily," was fined ss, with costs. James Ford pleaded guilty to a charge that at Glenavyj on November 7th last, he had unlawfully, but not so as to be guilty of theft, converted to his own use a motor : car valued at £ 70, the property of Biehard Gollan. He also pleaded guilty to breaking the terms of his release on probation. Accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on the conversion charge, and remanded to Christchurch on the other, ~ General News. - The general manager of the Electricity Department«reported to the Borough Council last night that in spite of heavy weather during the period under review, the Council had had a reliable supply from the Government through Grant's Hill sub-station.-At the Borough Abattoir during October, 318 cattle, 1584 sheep, 30 lambs, and 6 calves were slaughtered, a total of-1938 head, as compared with 1889 head for the same month last year. The Borough Engineer (Mr T. 0. FOx) reported to the Council last night: On the communication of the Levels County Council suggesting that a further portion of the Eyersley district be included in the borough, the unimproved value of the thirteen sections lying between the main North road, Eversley street, and the Eailway Beserve was £1330, and seven of the sections had nouses on them. The cost of providing Bewer drains would be £315, and water had been already supplied to them. On the recommendation of the Engineer the Council decided to include the area in the borough. . Borough Council. The fortnightly meeting of the Timaru Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace) occupying the chair. On the recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided that the Hydro Grand Hotel, Limited, be written to asking whether it would be agreeable to dedicate to the Council a strip of land at the corner of Stafford and Sefton streets, the costs in connexion with the matter to be paid by the Council. Mr G. H. Clements (Temuka) applied for permission to establish a motor service or services as follows:—(1) Temuka and Timaru, (2) Timaru to Winchester, (3) Clandeboye to Milford. He was supported-by Messrs T. Gunnion (Mayor of Temuka). and J. F. D, Jeune .(Town Clerk), ~ ~
Mr H. Lister, who has carried on motor services on this route for several years, opposed the application. Mr W. D. Campbell outlined the objections on behalf of Mr Lister.
Cr. P. B. Foote moved: "That the Temuka-Timaru license be.declined, but that if a separate application -is received for'the Clandeboye-Winehester-Milford-Temuka service the'matter will receive further consideration."
In seconding the motion, Cr. H. A. Innes-Jones maintained that the present service fulfilled the demands. Cr. P. C. Vinnell said that; an application which had been supported by 200 residents-of Temuka was. .worthy of more than a five-minuto discussion. He moved, and Cr. A. L.' Gee seconded; "Thai; the matter be held : over for further consideration."
The amendment was lost, and: Cr. Foote'a motion : carried by- a - large majority. - - Arising out of the decision at'the special meeting of : the Council on' Monday of last week when the resignation of: the Town Clerk, Mr O. MacHattie. was discussed, Mr MacHattie applied for a hearing in connexion with the matter. ■ . t The Mayor, opposed the application on the grounds that the question had. been dealt with by the Council and a discussion would be out of order, A. motion fey Cr Innes-Jones'that the request be granted and that Mr' Mac be heard iril committee was carried by six votes to five. < On resuming in; open. meeting, the Mayor announced tnat _it had been decided to issue a testimonial under the seal of the Council. The appointment of a. successor to Mr MacHattie would be left in the hands of the Mayor and. the chairman of the Committee.
