ASHBURTON. DEATH ON TRAIN. An inquest into the death of James Campbell, aged 48 years, who collapsed on the Christchurch-Timaru train on Saturday night, was held before the District Coroner (Mr B. Clark) yesterday, afternoon. Dr. G. J. S. Fisher said he had held a post-mortem examination, and found that deceased had kidney disease. In his opinion death was due to heart failure. Eobert Campbell said his brother had suffered from rheumatism for about 20 years, otherwise his health had been good. Evidence was also given by Constance Sherwood, Katherine Storrier, and Constable J. E. Boyd. The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the doctor's evidence. Generous Gift. The chairman of the Hospital Board (Mr F. W. Watt) reported to the Board yesterday that he had received a gift of £IOO from a resident of the County for the hospital. The amount would be subsidised by the Government, making the total £2OO. It was decided to place on record the Board's appreciation of the gift, and of the donor's continued welfare m the hospital. „.„ ~_ , It was agreed that Dr. H. S. Billcliff, who is at present in London, be given authority to purchase new or up-to-date equipment, for use in the hospital or surgery, to the value of £2OO. Breach of Probation Order. Charged with having broken the terms of his probation order, Bernard Louis Blackwell, appeared before Messrs W. H. Bundle and R. Clark, J.P.'s at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, and was remanded-to appear before the Magistrate on Friday. Milk-Testing Competition. The result of the milk-testing competition for young men not exceeding 20 years of age, in connexion with the Ashburton A. and P. Show has been announced by the Judge (Mr B. Keig) as follows:—C. Innes (High School) 1, J. Betteridge (High School) 2, J. Bently (High School) 3, D. McCormack (High School) 4. Hospital Board. At the monthly meteing of the Hospital Board held yesterday, Mr F. W. Watt presided. A resolution of sympathy was passed with Mr J. Bruce in the death of his daughter-in-law. The chairman of the Hospital Committee reported that the recommendation of the Board had been accepted by the Minister for Health and a new agreement for three years from January Ist, had been made with the Friendly Societies ' Association. The Committee recommended the Board to grant £2O to the Plunket Society for this year. Tb Medical Superintendent reported that 68 patients remained in hospital at the beginning of last month. Sixtyeight were admitted during the month and 77 discharged, leaving 38 males and'. 21 females. The Matron reported that Sister Wratten left on November Bth and her place was taken by Miss Mary McKay, of Pahia. Nurses Bpwden, Miller, and Quealy passed the final hospital ation and wpuld sit for the State ination, on December; sth; ;■■-. <l : <-»: ; ; : The reports from the maternity homes showed that during last month IV patients were admitted to Malvern, 19 discharged,' leaving 5, and* 4 were admitted at Methven, 2 discharged, and two,: rmeained," while 4 were admitted at Eakaia, 2 discharged, leaving 3. A copy of the reply of the Buperin : tendent of the Waipiata Sanatorium (Dr. A. Kidd) to the report of the T.B. Commission was received and consideration was deferred until a later meeting. It was further agreed -to obtain the opinion of the Minister for Health on the finding of the Commission. The children of the Borough School forwarded an amount of £5 10s to pro-, vide a cot for the children's ward. It; was decided to place on record tbi Board's appreciation of the gift and to thank the children f-or the warm intereßt they were manifesting in the Children of the hospital. v With regard to the request of jne Midwives" and Nurses' Registration Board that, wherever possible, Hospital Boards should establish ante-natal clinics in connexion with their training schools for nurses, a deputation consisting of Drs. J. Connor andl W.< «. Eyburn waited on the Board. The proceedings were taken in committee and on resuming in open meeting the chairman reported that it'had been decided to make certain representations to tne Board. - ' Hamputead Memorial Society.
