THREE NEW PASSENGER LINERS. RANGITIKI READY IN FEBRUARY (PEOM OUR OWN COBRESPOKDENT.I LONDON, October 5. In the Port of London Supplement of "The Times," the P. and 0. Line have a full-page advertisement. In one corner of the page is .the reproduction of a pencil drawing of the Rangitiki, which is the name of the New Zea-land-Shipping Company's new motor-vessel for service between England and the Dominion by way of the Panama Canal. A great deal of secrecy is being 'preserved' by the company regarding their new liners, but judging from the picture, the Rangitiki is a fine vessel. It is being built at the yards of Messrs John Brown and Co., Clydebank, and it will be commissioned in February next. The vessel is fitted with Diesel engines, 'the same type as those on the Aorangi, and the tonnage is 17,500. Two other motor vessels of similar design for the company are on the stocks, and it is expected that these two, as yet unnamed,'.will be ready for service towards the end of next year. . Consequent on the death of Mr . Allan Hughes, last July, Mr;C. J. Cowan has been promoted to the position of managing director of tho New Zealand Shipping Company. Mr Godfrey Holdsworth (previously assistant manager of "the company) has now been made manager. Mr Cowan has just arrived back from a holiday cruise of the Mediterranean. Before the Shaw, Savill liner, Mataroa, set out on her journey to New Zealand on September 28th, some radical readjustments had been made to her engines, the object being to increase her speed. Mr J. Macmillan (manager of the company) has had a wireless message from the captain of the vessel that sho is making 14i knots. This means that on the run to Now Zealand she will gain three days and will arrive on the Thursday night setting down, passengers on the Friday instead of, BS previously, arriving on tbe Sunday and setting down passengers on tho Monday.
