BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SUMNER. The Sumner Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson), and Crs. F. 0. Coopor, H. W. Karris, C I. Denham, H. E. Crawshaw, E. P. Sandford, A. Holden, D. F. Oldridge, and H. C. Jones, A motion of sympathy with the borough engineer (Mr G Harper) in the death of his mother was passed. The Standing Committee reported that at its meeting a petition from Taylor's Mistake asking for the completion of the water supply scheme, was considered. It was derided that the work of connecting up the water supply be proceeded tvith, subject to the cost of the reservoir being borne by the residents of the Mistake; also provided that the three sites promised by Morten's trustees for reservoir purposes are trans ferred to the Council before the work is proceeded with, and that the town clerk ascertain if the water easement had been tiansferred; further that Mr Sinclair, be asked to complete a drainage easement he had offered to the Council adjoining Mr Nicholson's property. It was decided to thank the Automobile Association for supplying notice : boards for the use of motorists.

The question of name-plates for the tuiotis streets was held over until farther quotations were obtained. The engineer was authorised to require persons opening up streets to deposit an amount estimated to cover the cost of repairs.

The Beautifying Association's request for a water tap at the Clifton tram-stop was referred to the engineer with power to dot. With .reference to the position regarding scarlet fever oases brought to Sumner, the committee recommended that a ruling be obtained from the Director-General of Health.

The Canterbury Surf Association wrote requesting a grant from the Counoil towards the provision of beach patrols during the bathing season. The Mayor said the object was worthy of every consideration. The Christoharoh City Counoil had granted £6O, and the question boiled down to the Council's finanoial ability to make a grant. Or. A. Hold en moved, and it was agreed, that £5 be granted. The Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote thanking the Council for assistance nt the recent demonstration and asking for permission to conduot side-shows at Scarborough on Boxing Day, the funds thus derived to go towards defraying the cost of sending a team to Hokitika in March, 1029. Permission was granted. An application for permission to erect a garage at the foot of the hill near Shag Bock, held over from the previous meeting so that councillors could inspect the site, wae granted.

Following some discussion on the question of wholesale speeding through Bedcliffs on Sunday afternoons, Cr. Holden moved that the Town Clerk be authorised to obtain quotations for a modified speed trap, since the prioe of a scheme submitted previously was considered excessive.
