Nightmarch, winner of the New Zealand Derby, is not engaged in the Great Northern Derby, and as his name is also missing from the respective lists of entries for the New Zealand St. Leger and Great Northern St. Leger, he will sot, therefore, have the opportunity of winning dual classic honours. How luck enters into the breeding of racehorses is once again exemplified in the case of the Melbourne Cup winner, Statesman. His dam, Marcelle (by Martagon), was imported from England by Mr N. Falkiner, owner of the Noorilim Stud in Victoria in 1916, but she was not apparently viewed in a favourable light, for in the autumn of 1922 the was sent up to auction at Melbourne, and she fell to the bid of Mr W. Kelso at 300 guineas. Mated with Demosthenes in New South Wales, a chestnut eolt was the xesult. That colt is Statesman.
It was the idea that the direction •* racing in Melbourne would suit the Sydney filly, Pay Paix, a daughter of Paper Money, that led to her being taken to Victoria. This proved correct, for Pay Paix won the fillies' division of the St. Albans' Handicap at Moonee Valley on October 27th in attractive style (says a Melbourne writer). In her races in Sydney Pay Paix showed a tendency to hang out, and the left-hand-ed way of galloping in Victoria was expected to suit her. Though drawn on the extreme outside of the field in her x&ee, Pay Paix was brilliant enough to, ■core from the outsider, Moirawa, by a short head. It was expected that the lad barrier position would cause Pay Paix trouble, but she was well up all the way, and got to the front inside the distance. She had a hard race, first having to battle off Stun sail and Regalette, and then being forced to withstand a strong challenge from Moirawa. But she came through in great style. The finish was one of the closest seen in Melbourne for some time. Stunsail, Begalette, Pay Paix, and Moirawa flashed past the post almost in line. The judge decided with short heads between the placed horses, while Stunsail could not have been any further back. TROTTING NOTES. In the Forbury Park T.O. handicaps Proud Ata (scr) was omitted from the Dominion Handicap.
