SCARLET FEVER.
PRECAUTIONS IN SCHOOLS MORE CHILDREN EXCLUDED. The Medical Officer of Health (Dr.'T. Fletcher Telford) yesterday decided that all children of ten years of age and under, irrespective of the standard in which they are, shall be excluded from the public schools in the Metropolitan area. This restriction does not apply to scholars ten years and under who are attending boarding schools, and are boarders, but applies to day scholars attending those schools. Dr. Telford said yesterday: "I am very pleased that the Masters' Association drew my attention to the fact that there were children of ten years and under in higher standards than Standard I. "I am pleased to be able to state that according to reports received from my inspectors, the proprietors of places of public amusement appear to be assisting the Department satisfactorily in regard to its restriction on the admission of children of ten years of age and under. Similar action has been taken in reapcct-of the Municipal Baths." Age Groups. Of the 42 cases of scarlet fever reported in the Canterbury Health District during the week ended noon yesterday, the number for each age group was as follows: I—lo years .. ..26 10 —15 years .. .. 5 15 —20 years .. ... 7 20 —25 years .'. .. 1 25—30 years .. .. 2 Over 30 years .. .. 1 Number in each locality according to age:—l year to 10: Metropolitan area 19, Timaru 4, Leeston 1, Waimate 1, Eangiora 1. Ten years to 15 years: Metropolitan area 4, Timaru 1. Fifteen years to 20: Metropolitan area 3, Timaru 2. Killinchy 1, Oxford 1. Twenty to 25: Metropolitan area 1. Twenty-five to 30; Metropolitan area 1, Oxford 1. Over. 30 years: Metropolitan area 1. Of the 42 cases, 29 were in the Christchurch Metropolitan area (21 of these were in Christchurch City proper), 7 in Timaru, 2 in Oxford, and 1 each in Waimate, Killinchy, Leeston, and Eangiora. Tbo Metropolitan Area. Children in Standard. I. and lower classes, and children ten years of age and under, irrespective of their standard, residing in the undermentioned districts (which constitute the Metropolitan area) are excluded from attendance at school, Sunday School, places of amusment, and the Municipal Baths:— iAddington, Avonside, Ashbourne, Beckenham, Bexley, Belfast, Bromley, Bryndwr, Burwood, Cashmere, Dallington, Fendalton, Fisherton, Halswell, Harewood, Heathcbte, Hilmorton, Hillsborough, Hoon Hay, Hornby, Lahsdowne, Linwood, Lyttelton, Marshland, Masham, Middleton, Merivale, Mt. Pleasant, New Brighton, Opawa, Papanui, Redcliffs, Riccarton, Riccarton Upper, Richmond Roimata, Sydenham, Shirlev. Sockburn. St Martins, Strowan Styx, Sumner Spreydon. »t. Albans', Tamai, Thorrington, Waltham, Wainoni, Windsor, and Woolston.
