ATHLETICS.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS. ANNUAL SPORTS. In brilliant sunshine, the annual sports of the Canterbury Public Schools were held at Lancaster Park yesterday. The ground presented a gay spectacle, hundreds of boys and girls of all ages striving cheerfully for the honour of their school* A heavy nor'-wester swept across the ground in the afternoon, but did not abate the enthusiasm of the Phillipstown were successful in the boys sections, scoring a narrow victory over W® B * Christchurch, while Sydenham won the girls Bectiou. Prominent among the runners was G. Lagrosse (Lyttelton D.H.S.), a distinctly promising athlete. Lagrosse recorded 11 4-ssec for the 100 yds alter a keen struggle with A. Hobson (Linwood). Although small in stature, P. O'Brien (West Christchurch) proved too speedy for his opponents in the under 12 section, winning three events. 0. Bond (Phillipstown), in the under 13, and A. Tolputt in the ander 14, also distinguished themselves. The relays proved an attractive feature of the day's sport, Phillipstown showing good team work. In the girls' section very good form was shown, keenness and enthusiasm marking the running of all races. All events were evenly contested, and there were one or two outstanding performers. The 100 yds championship was run in very fast time, and the winner, Edna Brown, gives promise of being one of the province's leading lady sprinters in the near future. A. particularly pleasing feature of the girls' display was their attractive uniforming, many schools having distinctive dresses for their competitors to run in. The colours ranged from brilliant scarlet to the more subdued green, and the whole mado a very gay and pleasing effect. The sports were admirably conducted and reflected great credit upon the teachers who were responsible rfor the organisation and control. Following were the results:— Championship. BOYS.
