OVER £3,000,000.
PUBLIC WORKS FOR AUCKLAND [THE FSESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND. November 8. When work is commenced on the constraction of the Moraingside railway deviation, in accordance with the announced intention of tlie Prime Minister, the Government will be engaged on the most ambitious programme of public, works ever concentrated upon one city. No less than £2,500,000 of Government money is being spent in Auckland on schemes now rapidly approaching completion. An early start on the Morningside project, with its 13 mile tunnel under tne city, will bring this figure well over the £3.000.000 mark. It is instructive to note, in view of the suggestion inspired for political purposes that railway development is being neglected, that of this huge sum no less than £2,700,000 is devoted to railway works in Auckland, including the construction of the Westfield deviation, the new Auckland railway station and yards, the Otabuhu railway workshops, and now the Morningside deviation. The balance represents the cost to the Government of the waterfront road, the modelling of Orakei garden suburb, and the'construction of the Hobsonville aerodrome, all °* which are in course of construction. _ The approximate cost of the works is as follows: - Westfield deviation, £500,000; station and , yards. £1,000,000: Otahubu workshops, £600,000; Morningside deviation, £600,000; Orakei suburb. £350,000; waterfront road, £120,000; Hobsonville Aerodrome, £100,0C0; total, £3.270,000.
