MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. NOR'-WEST GALE. Ashburton waß visited by a violent nor'-west gale early yesterday morning. About fifteen telephone lines were put out of action by falling trees and branches. Party lines were affected in Eiffelton, Wakanui, Seafield, and Rakaia, and 120 subscribers were disconnected at Mayfield. The Mayfield toll line was out of action for a time. A pole was broken off on the main south toll line near Hinds, interrupting all communication south for about an hour. Most trouble in the electric power system was round about Mayfield, Ruapuna, and Lismore. A pole was blown over at Maronan and another at Rakaia. The roof was blown, off a whare at the farm of Mr W. J. McCausland, Lismore, and hurled against the electric wires, interrupting the supply of current. Current was also off for a period round about the Black bridge at Eiffelton. Damage was also done to gardens and orchards in town. Two trees were blown down in the Domain. A Broken Wrist. Percy Baker, son of Mr M. Baker, 'Allenton, broke his right wrist yesterday, and received attention at the County Hospital. W.O.T.U. At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton branch of the W.C.T.U, Mrs T. Moore presided. Votes of sympathy were passed with Mesdames W. Bennett, A. Lloyd, and Staples in their bereavement, and also with several members laid aside by sickness. At the request of the editor of the "White Ribbon" it was decided to endeavour to obtain new subscribers. Votes of thanks were passed to those who had assisted the Union on Gala Day, and also to the Y Branch. A number of parcels were received for the Willard Home. Miss E. S. Gaarder, delegate to the recent District Convention at Christchurch, gave a comprehensive report upon the conference. Tire Brigade. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade, was held on Wednesday night, when Superintendent T. Barber presided. Engineer P. Leslie applied fora gold star for twenty-five years' service, and Fireman F. Looms for an additional two years' silver bar. A gift of £2 was received from Dr. G. J. Si Fisher. Golf. i The Ashburtpn Golf Club will hold its closing day to-morrow when a mixed foursomes will be played. technical School Board. The Technical School Board met yesterday, Mr R. Galbraith presiding. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £560 Is 6d. It was decided to support the ' Nelson Board's protest to the Department against an increase in the fees for evening classes. In rgply to the Board's letter pointing out the hardship of fixing a minimum number of students for classes in continuation and junidr commercial subjects, the Director of Education wrote stating that if, at the beginning of 1929, the Board found it impossible to arrange reasonable classes, it should communicate with the Department pointing out any difficulties. The High School Board wrote asking if .the Technical School could make pror vision for instruction in metal-work and wool-classing, for High School pupils,, either full classes separately or partclasses, in the time-table for 1929. The director stated that arrangements could be made to . comply with the re- . quest.. .'...

The Railway Department advised that the Board's request for the speeding-up of the early north and south and Mt. Somers trains conveying school children could not be carried out with benefit to the services.

The staff was complimented upon the excellence of the pupilsexhibits at the A. and P. Show.

It was decided to apply to the Education Department for a grant towards the cost of installing a heating system. A sum of money was granted towards the provision of prizes. It,was .decided to ask the .Rev. A. J. Petrie to give an address at the annual break-up ceremony.

Aero Club. At the meeting of the Aero Club on Wednesday, Messrs J. R. Richardson and J. H. Millar were re-elected captain and hon. secretary, respectively, and Mr P. A. Turner was elected vice* captain in place of Mr A. H. Haden. The following committee was elected: Dr.VW. R. Ryburn and Messrs A. H. Haden, R. E. Napier, J. 0. Williams, G. T. Clarke, E. M. Clark, J. A. Crowe, R. J. Laurenson, A. R JJourley, A. L. Jones, W. 0. Hayes, W. J. Haslemore, C. Campbell, and G. Hefford, jun.

Profits from Gala. The Labour Day Gala Committee met last evening. , ' It was reported that the net proceeds to the A.A.A. for town improvement would be approximately and the Ashburton A. and P. Association's share of the Queen carnival (40 per cent.) would be about £260.

HINDS. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Hinds Branch of the Mothers' Union, held in the Vicarage on Wednesday afternoon. Mi's Hanna occupied the chair. . Mrs Petrie, from Ashburton, gave an address on "Meditations on the Life of Jesus Christ." An invitation from the Ashburton branch to be present at their next meeting was accepted. Afternoon tea was then served. Mrs Marshall. secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, reported that the sum of £8 15s 6d had been collected. MOUNT SOMERS. A spell of warm nor'-west conditions is being experienced, and, although winds are not desired, the warm spell is most welcome after the recent rain. Gales on Monday uprooted several trees and did minor damage to outbuildings. . ... Miss A. Beckley (Dunedin) is waiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. R. Beckley. methven.
