"GATHERING OF THE CLANS."
SCOTTISH SOCIETY'S CONCERT. For over two hours in the Municipal Concert Hall last night an audience that was evidently more than "malstiy Scotch" thoroughly enjoyed the admirably diversified programme of Scottish song and Highland dancing that the Scottish Society provides at its annual "Gathering of the Clan*." Hitherto these concerts have been held in .the Society's rooms, bat in recent years the so* commodation has proved insufficient, and this year the Society faced the position 7 boldly by deciding to give the concerts intho Municipal Concert Hall. . The big audience last night and the excellence of the. fare provided testified that the success of the Society's enterprise was' assured. As is customary, sprigs of heather were distributed. Lovers of Scottish song were instant in their' appreciation of a singer new. to these parts, in Hiss Anne Duff, who won all. heart* by her natural- and sympathetic interpretation of "Jessie's Dream'" and "Boos the Bum. Davie Lad." With Mr Guy Struther*. the seldom-heard duet, "The Orookit Bawbee,", was pleasingly given. Tbei audience was far tiojn satisfied, and was eager for more, and it can be confidently predicted that tonight's audience will have a similar desire after hearing Kiss Duff sing. ? • .■ The programme opened with the, singing by Mr J. McLean of "Scots Wha Hae"S he also sang "The March of the Cameron Men." The Society's Pipe Band gave selections, and Misses Benniev Campbell, Dickson, and Belmer danced » Highland reel. Allison was very successful in re-creating the atmosphere of the old ballad by his. artistie singing of "Kirkconnel Lea," and responded y with "Bonnie Scotland." Mr Les Stewart gave with success the song "Lochnagar." Mrs J. Forrester , opened the second part with the pianoforte selection, "Scottish. Airs," and her brilliant execution brought forth the warmest applause. Mr A. McDonald was in excellent voice, and was cue* eessful with the fine patriotic song."Scotland," and responded to an encore with "The Sergeant-Major." .A tailor'* hornpipe was daintily danced by Miss Jean .MeLachlan, and "McGregor's Gathering" was well sung by Mr Leslie Fleming. • Humorous songs by Jock Lochart were warmly applauded.
