EIGHT DESTROYED AT TIMARU. A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. (SPECIAL 30 THE PRESS.) TIMARU, November L A spectacular blaze occurred in the motor-rcar store, of the Dominion Motors, Ltd., Stafford street, at an early hour on Saturday morning, when eight new cars were burned beyond repair, and damage to the extent of about £IOOO was done to the building. The origin of the fire is unknown.
The alarm was given at 1,20 a.m. Had it been a few minutei later it would have been impossible to save the garage, and the wooden lining of the roof would have facilitated the spreading of the flames to adjoining premises. The blaee was the most serious conflagration in Stafford Btreet for. a number of years. . The Timaru Fire Brigade, under Superintendent P. Campbell, was promptly on the scene, and effected a splendid save under considerable difficulty. The blaze had a good hold before the arrival of the firemen, but, after an hour's strenuous effort, they managed to overcome the fire. The motor store, which is at the rear of the Tekapo building, is above the workshop and car-cleaning department of the garage, and is used to house new and used cars. It is believed that the outbreak commenced in the north-west corner of the building, where the new cars were stored , On Saturday morning the gutted store presented a scene of chaos. The floor, which was badly burned _in places, was strewn with charred timber and pieces of twisted metal, which had once been motor-cars In, some cases the windshield glass had melted infr. a solid mass, an indication of the intense heat when the fire was at its hG fi\.
