FRUITGROWERS.
MEETING OF CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association met on Saturday night, Mr E. Freeman presiding. Reporting on a visit paid to orchards in Heathcote Valley and Papanui, the chairman said that they found everything looking very well in tho valley. The Papanui orchards were looking very well, with big crops, and if there were no frosts there would be almost a record crop for Papanui this year. Mr L. Paynter, Government Orchard Instructor, said that the prospects throughout Canterbury were better than last year, and the trees, taken all round, were looking healthier, tie had been on holiday in Nelson, where the prospects were good, though since the beginning of September the wear ther had been wet and cold. There was no sign, however, of black spot. The weather experienced might affect the setting of the fruit, but the bloom was exceptionally heavy on all varieMr Paynter gave a short description of the experiments being conducted at Mr F. W. Cone's orchard, Papanui, with proprietary brands of Bordeaux powder for the control of black spot. Following on the application of these sprays precipitated sulphur was b®ing used. The experiments were still 111 progress, and later he would give the results.
