I'oi the year 1927-28, the increase in the population of New' Zealand was 15,037, or 1.08 per cent.; of the population at the beginning of. the, year.. The net gain of population in the North Island was 11,763; the increase iii the South Island was 3191. Goveruin-snt-assisted immigration (according to an oflic'ial report of the Government Stat-: istician) has risen greatly. The average during 1920-27 was 7836 • per annum. compared with an annual average of 3479 persons during 1909-131 .'Assisted immigrants arriving in 1927, however, numbered only SS9D, compared with 10,766 for the previous year, a temporary suspension of the scheme operating during the' latter half of 1927. A special telephone-call, with a charge of 2}d, has been establishediin ■ New York for people who..wish to kndw the time. In one day it brought in a revenue of over £IOO.
