HIGH MORTALITY.

DISEASE IN ENGLAND. INCREASING SICKNESS. (united press association—by electbio TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.) (Received October 22nd, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 21. Counting only sickness for which unemployment insurance is payable, Sir George Newman, Chief MedicafOfficer of Health, states that sickness in England and Wales in 1927 caused the loss of 30,000,000 weeks' work, equivalent to a whole year for 590,000 persons. The year 1927 also showed an increase of 30,000 deatlis compared with 1926, principally due to influenza and diseases of the heart and lungs. However, Sir George is of the opinion that science is rapidly gaining knowledge to combat these_ diseases. Hie strongly urges the increased consumption of milk. The average consumption is under half a pint per day. The campaign should be pressed until an average of a pint' is reached. The death-rates of infants and of mothers at childbirth have shown no improvement in thirty years. The only effective remedy, _ Sir George says, is ante-natal supervision with State aid. —United Service.
