NELSON DAY.

OBSERVANCE IN CHRISTCHURCH.

Although there was not a very lavish display of hunting from buildings in the City in honour of Nelson Day on Saturday, there was an excellent display of wreaths in front of the Cathedral. There were also displayed the flags constituting Nelson's •famous message on the eve of the battle of Trafalgar, and the following flags:— Welsh, Crosses of Bt. Andrew, St. George, and S*t. Patrick, the flags of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, and the Union Jack.

The Wreaths. The Canterbury (New Zealand) branch of the Navy League laid wreaths in memory of the men of'the Eoyal Navy and auxiliary forces who gave their lives in the Great War, and also one in memory of the oflicers and men of the Empire Armies, 1914-18. The president of the League (Mr J. J. Dougall) presented a wreath of poppies, roses, anemones, and tulips. Other wreaths were sent by the following:— Lyttelton Harbour Board, St. Andrew's College, Victoria League, Christchureh Ladies' Guild of the British Sailorß' Society, Christchureh Drainage Board, Veterans' Association, Canterbury Rugby Union, Christchnrch Girls' High School, Canterbury Women's Club, Canterbury Education Board, Sea Scouts and Boy Scouts of New Zealand, Christchureh Returned Soldiers' Association, ..nd the Canterbury division of thv Royal Naval and Volunteer reserve. Wreaths were laid also in memory of the French and Spanish sailors.

LONDON COMMEMORATION. (Received October 21st, 6.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 20. Flags, festoons, and evergreens, commemorating Trafalgar Day, adorn the Nelson Column. The most extraordinary tributes are two wreaths sent by the Navy League in New Zealand, encased in ice, being red and gold chrysanthemums, and from the crew of H.M.S. Victory. There are also massive wreaths from the Governments and peoples of Australia and New Zealand.—Australian Press Association.
